"Ruby" by Kenny Rogers
Talks about a man's wife who is going out on the town with other men and he's left at home injured by the Viet Nam war. In the song, he's begging her to "Ruby, don't take your love to town." But then he hears the closing of the door. Very sad.

I'm not a big country music fan, BUT this song is pretty sad to me. (just like all other country songs. :) )
"Don't Take the Girl"- Tim McGraw

Johnnys daddy was taking him fishin
When he was eight years old
A little girl came through the front gate holdin a fishing pole
His dad looked down and smiled, said we cant leave her behind
Son I know you dont want her to go but someday youll change your mind
And johnny said take jimmy johnson, take tommy thompson, take my best friend bo
Take anybody that you want as long as she dont go
Take any boy in the world
Daddy please dont take the girl

Same old boy
Same sweet girl
Ten years down the road
He held her tight and kissed her lips
In front of the picture show
Stranger came and pulled a gun
Grabbed her by the arm said if you do what I tell you to, there wont be any harm
And johnny said take my money, take my wallet, take my credit cards
Heres the watch that my grandpa gave me
Heres the key to my car
Mister give it a whirl
But please dont take the girl

Same old boy
Same sweet girl
Five years down the road
Theres going to be a little one and she says its time to go
Doctor says the babys fine but youll have to leave
cause his mommas fading fast and johnny hit his knees and there he prayed
Take the very breath you gave me
Take the heart from my chest
Ill gladly take her place if youll let me
Make this my last request
Take me out of this world
God, please dont take the girl

Johnnys daddy
Was taking him fishin
When he was eight years old

Kansas - "Dust in the Wind"

I close my eyes
Only for a moment, then the momen't gone
All my dreams
Pass before my eyes, a curiosity
Dust in the wind
All they are is dust in the wind Same old song
Just a drop of water in an endless sea
All we do
Crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see
Dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind, ohh Now, don't hang on
Nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky
It slips away
And all your money won't another minute buy
Dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind Dust in the wind
Everything is dust in the wind
Everything is dust in the wind
The wind

Memphis Skyline by Rufus Wainwright

Lyrics

OMG, surf. I cried so much when Jeff Buckley died. I have his Grace album and the next one that was released posthumously, Sketches for my Sweetheart the Drunk. Man that guy had so much talent. I was supposed to go and see one of his shows he did here and missed it. Then I read the critiques for the show and the journalist said it was, as far as he was concerned, the show of the year. :blind:

And I have one Rufus Wainwright album, Want One. I will be getting Want Two in this case. I absolutely must have that song.

I got to see Rufus Wainwright live last summer.

He did Memphis Skyline with all of the lights out, but one candle on his piano. Before he started playing the song he went on in some detail about how he'd know Jeff Buckley for a while and respected him so much as a musician. Rufus was jealous of his hair, as any flamboyantly gay man would be. Then he played for what had to be one of the most surreal 3 minutes of my life.

It was moving.

see what i miss when i don't regularly log in from home...

sad for me is almost more about the sound of the song than the lyrics, though sometimes the lyrics can do it too.

lyrically though, these are pretty rough (and some definitely have sound to match):

death cab for cutie . what sarah said

lush . when i die

snow patrol . same

the innocence mission . snow

bob mould . thumbtack

and the killer. the written word does this no justice. even the album barely does it justice. live, it was earth-shattering. this is bob again, from the last entry.
sugar . the slim

sonically, there are a bunch of songs that just feel gut-wrenching to me, despite no lyrics, ambiguous lyrics, or words that just aren't mood killing without the notes behind them.

lush . last night
one of my favorites. the guitar solo at the end is one of the most perfect i've ever heard, layered over strings, fits the power and emotion of the song beautifully and makes me tear up every single time.

son volt . ten second news
a crawling western-esqe masterpiece of dusty forgotten towns and empty highway.

liz phair . shatter
while actually sort of a semi-positive love-song, the mood of the song is crushing and uplifting at the same time.

and there are plenty more. maybe i'll post a few more as i hear them... ;)

Not Now by Blink-182

If you read the lyrics you can pretty much guess what the song is about:

Come here, please hold my hand for now
Help me, I'm scared please show me how to fight this,
God has a master plan
And I guess
I am in his demand
Please save me this time I cannot run
And I'll see you when this is done
And now I have come to realize
That you are the one who's left behind
Please stay until I'm gone
I'm here hold on to me I'm right here
Waiting

I see, a light it feels good
And I'll come back soon just like you would
It's useless, my name has made the list
And I wish, I gave you one last kiss

Please stay until I'm gone
I'm here hold on to me I'm right here
Waiting and take
My one last breath, and don't forget
That I will be right here
Waiting

Please stay until I'm gone
I'm here hold on to me I'm right here
Waiting and take
My one last breath, and don't forget
That I will be right here
Waiting

man, i just listened to 'father and son' by cat stevens, i haven't given this one a good listen since my son has grown into a young boy (almost 4).
i started tearing up at work. i've had some hard times with my biological father, and now being a dad of two young boys, it just hit me in a really strong way.

cat sings as the father in blue, and the son in red.

it's not time to make a change,
just relax, take it easy.
you're still young, that's your fault,
there's so much you have to know.
find a girl, settle down,
if you want you can marry.
look at me, i am old, but i'm happy.

i was once like you are now, and i know that it's not easy,
to be calm when you've found something going on.
but take your time, think a lot,
why, think of everything you've got.
for you will still be here tomorrow, but your dreams may not.

how can i try to explain, when i do he turns away again.
it's always been the same, same old story.
from the moment i could talk i was ordered to listen.
now there's a way and i know that i have to go away.
i know i have to go.

it's not time to make a change,
just sit down, take it slowly.
you're still young, that's your fault,
there's so much you have to go through.
find a girl, settle down,
if you want you can marry.
look at me, i am old, but i'm happy.

all the times that i cried, keeping all the things i knew inside,
it's hard, but it's harder to ignore it.
if they were right, i'd agree, but it's them you know not me.
now there's a way and i know that i have to go away.
i know i have to go.

I googled a rather sad song that I don't particularly like, but it is definatelly one of the saddest I have ever heard

I can't live If living is without you

This one was covered by Maria Carey but the original was written and performed by Badfinger
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Badfinger

Some say the song is cursed, the guy who wrote it ended his life over the song!!
On November 19, 1983, Evans and Molland argued on the telephone about the past income still in escrow from the Apple era and the lucrative "Without You" performance royalties Evans was receiving. Following the argument, Evans hanged himself in the garden at his home, in a manner similar to Ham

Well, here are the lyrics, I don't sven have this song in my iTunes, its just too depressing

No, I can't forget this evening
Or your face as you were leaving
But I guess that's just the way this story goes,
You always smile....
But in you eyes your sorrow shows
Yes it shows

No I can't forget tomorrow
When I think of all my sorrows
When I had you there but then I let you go
And now it's only fair that I should let you know
What you should know

I cant live
If living is without you
I can't live
I can't give anymore
Can't live
If living is without you
can't give,
I can't give anymore

Well, I can't forget this evening
Or your face as you were leaving
But I guess that's just the way this story goes,
You always smile
But in you eyes your sorrow shows
Yes it shows

can't live
If living is without you
I can't live
I can't give anymore
Can't live
If living is without you
I can't live,
I can't give anymore

Ohhhhhh(No can't live)
No no no (No I can't live)
I can't live (No can't live)
If living is without (No I can't live)
I can't live (No can't live)
I can't give anymore (No I can't live)

"He's My Son" by Mark Schultz. The saddest song I've ever heard. To this day, I can't listen to it without balling like a baby. (Being a father can do that to a guy...)

It's gotta be "Blank Page" off the Smashing Pumpkins Adore album for me... almost haunting...

Blank page was all the rage
Never meant to say anything
In bed I was half dead
Tired of dreaming of rest
Got dressed drove the state line
Looking for you at the five and dime
But there I was picking pieces up
You are a ghost
Of my indecision

I'm So Happy I Can't Stop Crying by Sting
Literally made me cry once. The lyrics really hit deep with me because of my family, etc.

Seven weeks have passed now since she left me
She shows her face to ask me how I am
She says the kids are fine and that they miss me
Maybe I could come and baby-sit sometime
She says, are you o.k.? I was worried about you
Can you forgive me? I hope that youll be happy.
Im so happy that I cant stop crying
Im so happy Im laughing through my tears

I saw a friend of mine
He said, i was worried about you
I heard she had another man,
I wondered how you felt about it?
Im so happy that I cant stop crying
Im so happy Im laughing though my tears

Saw my lawyer, mr good news
He got me joint custody and legal separation
Im so happy that I cant stop crying
Im laughing through my tears
Im laughing through my tears

I took a walk alone last night
I looked up at the stars
To try and find an answer in my life
I chose a star for me
I chose a star for him
I chose two stars for my kids and one star for my wife
Something made me smile
Something seemed to ease the pain
Something about the universe and how its all connected

The park is full of sunday fathers and melted ice cream
We try to do the best within the given time
A kid should be with his mother
Everybody knows that
What can a father do but baby-sit sometimes?

I saw that friend of mine, he said,
you look different somehow
I said, everybodys got to leave the darkness sometime
Im so happy that I cant stop crying
Im laughing through my tears
Im laughing through my tears
Im so happy that I cant stop crying
Im laughing through my tears
Im laughing through my tears

Most of his stuff isn't country-esque but this song sort of is.. i can't find a great Youtube video of it but you should be able to find it somewhere if you search..
