That older dlink router he is using comes stock using 192.168.0.1. Linksys has always used 192.168.1.1.

I'm following this thread with great interest.
[background - as posted earlier, I've been unable to get either a G5 PPC iMac or and Intel Macbook to connect to the 'net via a Belkin router. From what I've been told, it is a modem/router configuration problem. Both Macs 'see' the Belkin, but there's no connection beyond that.]

The IP number quoted above has me puzzled. In setting up numerous wired modem/router units (OS 10.3 onwards), I've always used 192.168.1.x etc. In looking through all MD's posts and responses thereto, I cannot find mention of that numeral 1 (other than by me). What happens when you use, for example, 192.168.1.1. Try messing about with the final numeral(s), but make sure you leave the '1' intact.

That older dlink router he is using comes stock using 192.168.0.1. Linksys has always used 192.168.1.1.

So... Do I change the router address or what?

The IP range of your router is not the issue at all. I have an Apple Airport Extreme Base Station and it's at 10.0.1.1 and it works with every computer in the house.

Only reason I use 192.168.1.1 is that is what Linksys's all use and that was my first router, so I keep my main router at that IP.

Sorry, friends visiting and gone a lot. Will mess around with the old iMac and see if I can still come up with something to help.

Still watching, but can't contribute anything else - sorry. I'm going to start a new thread on the Belkin router problem to see if someone recognizes the issue and can provide a simple answer.

Okay, thanks guys. Appreciate all the help, and if you find anything, let me know. :) And in the meantime I'll look for some OS X CD's as it's probably the OS that's causing it.

The mystery deepens...

Alright...It's the G3 for sure now. I went into utilities and found this useful little app called Network Utility. Plugged the Ethernet cable in and it said that it actually was connected. Unfortunately it was still unable to browse, but it did have data being sent/received through the router. Now what?
