The Mac App Store is where the operating system install files are stored and from where they are downloaded. You don't invoke the App store app, but you do end up at the MAS. It's not critical how you get there. IN fact, he could go there now, before he does anything else, download Mountain Lion, build a bootable USB stick and install from there. No need to use Recovery Partition at all.

Haha I am not concerned with getting obtaining a copy of Mountain Lion. I just want to be able to have my system as it is now with Mountain Lion instead of Yosemite WITHOUT manually reinstalling every program and plugin and every setting and starting from scratch.

The point is, coryjuba, you are going to go through exactly that process to revert from Yosemite. You have to download Mountain Lion, do a clean install after formatting/erasing the drive, reinstall your software and then copy back your files.

Or you don't get back to Mountain Lion and stay on Yosemite.
