xbox live - 360/mac/cross over cable

I am trying to hook up xbox live by using a crossover cable to transfer my internet signal from my mac mini to my 360. I don't have enough ethernet to run to the router upstairs, which is why i bought the crossover. When I try and connect onto xbox live, there is a DNS error, and I don't know how to fix it, can't really find much information on it either. Does anyone know what I should do. Help is very much appreciated.

I do not think you need a crossover cable. What is the IP address on the Ethernet port of the Mac and on the Xbox? Are they on the same subnet?

I thought it would be as simple as turning on Internet sharing and plugging in an ethernet cable, but alas, the Xbox refused to acknowledge the connection. It agreed that a cable was connected, but steadfastly refused to get out to the `Net. After a few hours of frustration, and much Googling, here are the two "gotchas" to look out for:

1. If you're using an older Mac, then you must use a cross-over cable, not a standard patch cable. This is easy to identify. With both your Mac and your Xbox connected, open the Network control panel. Make sure that you're showing the Network Status section. If Built-in Ethernet's status light is red, you need a cross-over cable. If it is yellow or green, you're okay.

2. For whatever reason, the Xbox will not accept DHCP info from the Mac. Everything else I've ever tried will, but not the XBox. Monkeying with bootP or NetInfo is more than I want to tackle. The workaround is to manually enter the IP info for your Intenet Sharing Mac's subnet in the XBox live menus. Unless you've made changes, your info should be the same as mine:

* IP: 192.168.2.x (x being the number your want to give your Xbox; anything greater than 1 will be fine.)
* Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
* Router: 192.168.2.1
* DNS: You'll need to get this from your ISP, everyone's is different)

i tried both and neither worked. this is bunk, i've done about 14 different things. thanks for trying though. any other help is very much appreciated.

no luck with that either. There is a primary and secondary dns, i set it as the primary at first but no luck, then as both (can't have the secondary blank) and that didn't work either. I'm not really a genius when it comes to this network stuff (obviously) so maybe there is another dns code i need?

You can set the secondary to 4.2.2.1 or 207.68.220.220 or 4.2.2.2 but in my opinion the problem is somewhere else
Sure that XBOX is addressing an existing site ? I don't know XBOX so I cannot if this could be possible.

How is your Mac Mini getting online, wirelessly from a router in another room?

If so, you have to enable sharing from the Airport connection to your Ethernet connection in System Preferences before your Mac will function like a router.

And yes, you have to use a crossover cable between the Mac and the 360.

I don't care if the device is auto-sensing or not, like-devices use crossovers because the transmit/receive pair are on the same pins. When I install networking equipment, I always fabricate the correct cable.

As for DNS, if you enabled connection sharing in the Mac, you should set the Primary DNS on your 360 to that of the Mac's IP. The Mac *should* pass thru any/all DNS packets.
