I have a lab of iMacs with wired keyboards and the keyboards randomly lose communiation with the iMacs.

Are you talking one keyboard or multiple? I would say the problem is probably a bad cable/cables coming from the keyboard(s). ESPECIALLY in a computer lab where the hardware can really get abused by users.

And make sure keyboard is plugged directly into the iMac, not a hub.

The keyboards are plugged directly into the iMac. These are brand new keyboards and iMacs.
