Is there anyway to wipe the SSD of a fried macbook without actually removing it from the computer?

The computer doesn't turn on, and won't turn on without major work according to the Apple store and a non apple hardware store. I wanna sell it for parts but I'm worried about identity theft. Right now I'm just trying to decide if I should just remove the ssd myself and sell it like that, take it to a specialist to have it wiped, or try to wipe it myself.

It's a mid 2012 macbook pro.

What MacBook are you referring to? Year and model? Is the SSD one that you installed yourself or did it come with the machine? If the SSD is removable, then remove it, place it in a carrier or use an adapter and wipe it.

As chscag mentioned. The SSD needs to be removed...installed in an external case…plugged into a 2nd computer…and then wiped.

Welcome and sorry about your SSD.

I fitted one of those yesterday to the same model of MBP. I was a bit nervous about it but it turned out to be very easy.

I used this guide

Best of luck :)

Is there a cheaper alternative to an enclosure. The one listed on iFixit was 80 dollars before tax and shipping.

Is there something like a cord only?

Check OWC (Other World Computing) HERE - there are some external enclosures listed for about $20+ - you might want to do a 'live chat' or give them a call to make sure that your internal SSD is compatible w/ one of their products - good luck. Dave :)

If you check with OWC, they have some USB3 enclosures for less than $5. Reused, slightly marked, but for <$5...

I'm going to assume that this is a "regular" 13" 2012 MacBook Pro (not a 2012 retina MacBook Pro)..I think it was mentioned in post #1 that this was a mid-2012 MacBook Pro...and going to assume the SSD was installed after purchase. If so…then I think this enclosure should work. At $1.75…a pretty awesome deal!:)

This may be one of the possibilities Jake (MacInWin) was referring to above.

Well, did you go to the link mentioned? If so, you need to scroll down a little - screen capture below shows 2 of 4 in that price range; also, looking at the details of the first product (see second pic), the enclosure is stated to be compatible w/ either a HD or SSD - :) Dave

Do you know if it works with a mid 2012 macbook pro retina 250gb ssd?

I just realized the ssd is actually 512gb. I removed it from the computer and it says 512 on it.

We probably should have confirmed this earlier in the thread. The storage in this computer needs a much different enclosure.

my bad. also it isn't 250, its 512. I was wrong.

I might sell the computer to a guy for $270 cdn (200usd) later today. Do you think I'm getting a fair price for this computer without the SSD and broken motherboard https://support.apple.com/kb/SP653?locale=en_US (it's the one on the right).

I think that an enclosure like this is needed for a 2012 15" retina MacBook Pro flash memory drive. As can be seen…it's a bit more expensive:

https://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/MAU3ENVOYPRO/

This one is a little less expensive. It seems like it's for a MacBook Air…but the fine print also says 2012 retina MacBook Pro:

When selling broken computers…it's always very difficult to determine what a fair value is.

You can bet absolutely…if the MacBook Pro was disassembled & the good parts sold one at a time (display, bottom case, top case, trackpad, fans, speakers, ram, mag-safe board, battery, etc.)…these would probably fetch more than $200. But then you need to spend all the extra effort (and time) to sell everything.

The battery (if good), display, and trackpad by themselves would almost certainly sell for more than $200. If the mag-safe charger is also included in this $200 sale…that's easily $40 bucks right there.

You can try checking eBay's sold listings to see what similar vintage broken MacBook Pro's have sold for. This is really the best reference you can use.

HTH,

- Nick
