Lots and lots of games out there, and yes that is slowly growing smaller.

Frontpage (ugh), Coldfusion, (ugh), Windows (ugh)

Lots of custom programs written in the archaic days of Dos that can only be run on x86 systems.

Lots of Britannica stuff.

Most virus programs, most spyware :)

Cisco VPN client

Adobe Primeire Pro

AVS, SCV, Discover, AnimaBOB (SGI only)

There are a lot of things.. sure there are things that are almost as good on the Mac, but are better on the platform that they were created for. And There are a lot of programs that are better on the mac then on the other platforms. There is a lot of scientific software out there that are keeping a lot of scientists on SGI or PC workstations because it's just not available for the Mac yet.

These are just things that I know of..

i can emulate a x86 system, and can therefore run all of those programs...

but nice try :)

And then of course there are a lot of people here who work with PC's at their work and there might be a good reason why they use them there, due to the lack of an equivolent piece of software on the Mac, but most of the time it's just because they don't know how to use a Mac and "everyone is using PC's" so they don't realize how much better their workflow would become with Macs..

Anyways this discussion has wore me out and everything I do and need to do I can do with a Mac and I really enjoy the experience so no reason for me to worry about those programs I listed.. I don't use any of them! :)

i beleive MAC JUST got the top of the line video cards (radeon 9800 etc in the G5 line) - that PC"s have had for how long?
I beleive MAC's JUST got AGP 8x - which PC's have had for how long?
I beleive MAC JUST got DDR support - which PC's have had for how long
I beleive MAC's JUST got Serial ATA - which again, PC's have had for how long?

What do you mean by "JUST", a standard offering PC is a very rare beast if it has all these, in fact I haven't seen one yest that isn't more expensive than the PowerMac unless I were to build it myself and thee are still things it would lack, like a 1G system bus for example.

the whole "they copied us" issue can go back and forth on both sides - so dont act like MAC invented all the hardware out there. Also - it is

Eh? MAC isn't a company or even a person, Apple, Acorn,Sun, IBM, Xerox, Intel, Motorola, Zilog, AMD ... etc etc, they are the ones who invented the hardware, in fact of that list IBM has the lions share of patents. What is copied, and badly, is software and normally by MS, in fact I can't think of a single feature that didn't exist on another OS long before it appeared on windoze.

Well you should be happy to know in Eurpoe they are suing MS for about 460 million for this exact reason :) - they wanted MS to take out IE and Media player so people whould have options and share their code. But again - would Apple want say Pinnacle installing a video editing suitet in the O/S over Apples own? i highly doubt it!

Well it is a fine for illegal business practices and they deserve it. The whole point is that nobody should be including application code IN the OS, you can bundle whatever (poopoo) you want WITH the OS but MS is the only company that makes their (poopoo) an essential part of the OS that can't be removed, if you stop the explorer task in windoze for example you lose the whole OS, this is not true of ANY other OS.

But here is a question - if windows does no include a browser - how is one supposed to connect to the internet to get one?

You don't need a browser to connect to the internet.

Maybe if they include 3rd party browsers and a choice of what you want to install - sure - but this is no different then Apple forcing you to install various apps that you have no say over - which i am sure they do..... if not, my mistake.

They aren't forcing you to do anything, the apps you refer to are all separate from the OS and can be removed if you want. Have a guess what Apple also bundles with the OS, Internet Explorer! When Microshite decide to bundle Safari or Firefox with wondoze then I'll be impressed.

going to compare lets compare recent O/S to recent O/S.

OK, XP-Pro, crashed last night whilst playing URU, needed to be rebooted. I'll repeat, my Panther and Jaguar systems have NEVER crashed, nor for that matter have any of my Linux distros.

I did not know a Nvidia MX has coxial cable in connection ?? .... So how is it your watching a TV feed on your desktop? (unless of course you have a tv tuner card as well)

The OS does it, saves having to buy new hardware just to get a feature I may use once in a blue moon. ;)

I just did a tour of my PC's, none of them have an in connection to the video card either, in fact the only machine with video in as standard is the G5.

Of course my iMac is sitting in the same room as a 36" widescreen TV with Dolby 5.1 surround sound so why the **** would I want TV on my 17" flat panel display as well?

I've yet to find anything like MS Streets and Trips or Delorme Street Atlas (with the GPS support) for the mac.

What if Microsoft sold house windows....

1) All windows will need to be individually licensed.
2) Caulk 1.0 and WeatherStriping 1.5 would need to be purchased for keeping outside elements out of the house.
3) I would need to upgrade my house framing to support newer versions of windows.
4) Also MS Windex would be the only way you could keep your windows clean since Lindex does not have DRM rights to wash. Because MS Windows cannot be washed the standard way.
5) MS Windows only supports MS Blinds and MS Window Treatments.

that one was new to me... but while i was in the mood, i know this one has been around for a while... but its a classic (check out #6):

If Microsoft made cars...

In response to Bill's comments, General Motors issued a press release
stating (by Mr Welch himself, The GM CEO): If GM had developed
technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the
following characteristics:

1. For no reason whatsoever your car would crash twice a day.

2. Every time they repainted the lines on the road you would have to
buy a new car.

3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason,
and you would just accept this, restart and drive on.

4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn, would cause
your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would
have to reinstall the engine.

5. Only one person at a time could use the car, unless you bought
"Car95" or "CarNT." But then you would have to buy more seats.

6. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, reliable,
five times as fast, and twice as easy to drive, but would only run
on five per cent of the roads.

7. The oil, water temperature and alternator warning lights would be
replaced by a single "general car default" warning light.

8. New seats would force everyone to have the same size butt.

9. The airbag system would say "Are you sure?" before going off.

10. Occasionally for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out
and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the
door handle, turned the key, and grab hold of the radio antenna.

11. GM would require all car buyers to also purchase a deluxe set of
Rand McNally road maps (now a GM subsidiary), even though they
neither need them nor want them. Attempting to delete this option
would immediately cause the car's performance to diminish by 50% or
more. Moreover, GM would become a target for investigation by the
Justice Department.

12. Everytime GM introduced a new model car buyers would have to learn
how to drive all over again because none of the controls would
operate in the same manner as the old car.

13. You'd press the "start" button to shut off the engine.

Well I discovered why my XP-Pro PC crashed .... the disk was severely fragmented!

I installed XP-Pro 2 weeks ago and chose to completely format the drive to NTFS.

Today after rebooting following yesterdays crash the PC ran like a dog and eventually repeated the crash (again on exiting URU). This time I rebooted and ran the Disk Defrag utility, it told me that my Disk, which had 83% free space (since the format two weeks ago which gave me a formatted size of 38.28 Gb the free space has only dropped to 31.94 Gb) required defragging. The nice graphical display which show fragmented files in red and contiguous in blue was entirely red in colour with a small block of green which represents unmoveable files - I assume the windows swap file.

So half and hour later I now have a mainly blue graphic (with a few small green bits) and the PC is back in action.

Why I am surprised I do not know.

hehe be happy that defrag even worked... on the older versions of windows, if you run a hard drive over 80 gigs and havent formatted it for a year or so, forget it! ive left defrag on for over 2 days... never does anything for the drive lol

norton makes a utility to run defrag out of windows...which i presume is the best way to do it..simply because a screensaver is enough to throw windows for a loop and kill your defrag lol

but im glad youve delayed your crashes to another day! :-D

In my doz days -so glad they're over! I found that defrag needs to run about once a week. It was efficient that way.
