Will water damage from a long time ago prevent Apple from fixing the screen under warranty?

So here’s my situation...

I have a MacBook Pro from 2016. Very recently my retina screens anti-glare coating crap starting rubbing off. I called Apple and apparently this is a common issue with Macs from 2012-2017 and Apple will fix the effed up screen free of charge. SWEET! But then the guy on the phone mentions, if there are any other factors that may have caused this damage other than just the faulty coating, you will have to pay out of pocket for the repair...

Ok now let’s say that I had spilled water on my Mac waayyyy back in 2016, (literally like 2 weeks after I bought it) bad enough so that it would not turn back on and the guy at the Apple store was a GODSEND and managed to, not only fix it for free, but replaced a few of the keys that were wonky. Life went on and everything has been fine ever since.

Long story short, I’m assuming they can probably tell by opening up my Mac that there was previous water damage. Will they need to open up the bottom portion of my Mac and will this prevent them from fixing my screen which very clearly has NOTHING to do with the water damage of 4 years ago?

Welcome to our forums.

If Apple repaired your MacBook Pro after it sustained water damage, then you should have no problem getting the screen replaced under Apple's extended warranty for the anti-glare coating.

Do you have a record of that repair, just in case?

The only way to replace the screen, is to disassemble the MacBook Pro. So yes, there will need to open up there bottom of the MBP.

unfortunately no... however my Mac works completely fine. So I don’t see how they can say an issue with the screen that began a couple months ago could be the product of water damage from 4 years ago. I guess i really have no other options either way so I think I’m just gonna play dumb, cross my fingers, and cross that bridge if and when I get to it. Thank you for your response, though. Very much appreciated

They may not tell you up front about the not being covered because of the water damage. They may find it after they send it out.

If Apple officially repaired your Mac after the water ingression, that means that the water incident is in the past. In effect, the repair returned the Mac to its former position and the work would have been guaranteed for a period of time after the repair.

As the current problem is unrelated, and is a known issue with that Mac anyway, there should be no difficulty.

Good luck.

I hope they don’t! Because that way I will tell them they are CRAZY if they think I’m gonna pay for something they didn’t inform me of. But that’s definitely not gonna happen. He very clearly stated that if there was an discrepancy, they would cease any and all action until consulting with me.

Well the “repair” that Apple did with the water damage was slightly off the record. At first i tried to play dumb like i didn’t know why the computer wasn’t turning on. The guy who helped me at the Apple store was like
“uh huh.... you sure you didn’t spill anything on it?” And i was like
“maybe a smidge of water?”
and then seeing how distraught I was over having potentially broken my brand new MacBook Pro, he took it into the back for a while and came back out with it working just fine. Like a miracle. But I don’t know that there was any paperwork or record of it or if he was just being a nice dude.

Apple has a record of every repair I've ever had.

Yeah but I feel like this particular “repair” might have gotten him in a little trouble as I really don’t think water damage is supposed to be a free fix. But either way, fingers crossed!!
