Ok, so I have an American laptop and I am in Europe now, occasionally I need to use PAL discs and of course my laptop won't read them. If I buy an external PAL dvd burner (that is compatible of course), will I be able to read PAL discs, rip ISO's from them, etc? Thank you in advance.

Your Mac won't read PAL.... are you sure?
Anyway, you can use DVD Player (in applications folder), and go to help menu, and type in DVD region codes, and you can save your money

As for the rest, you may want Toast Titanium Roxio Toast 10 Titanium - Superb CD and DVD Burning with your Mac or MacTheRipper Download MacTheRipper 2.6.6 - A freeware DVD ripper (extractor) for Mac OS X - Softpedia or both.
Ok, so I have Toast already, I don't see on DVD player where I Can change it? I typed dvd region codes into the help, and it says in order to change it I just type the desired region code into the dialogue... what dialogue?!?!

"To play a DVD, the region code of the DVD must match the region code of your DVD drive. Your DVD drive is automatically set to a region code the first time you play a coded DVD. If the region code for a DVD does not match the current region code of your DVD drive, a dialog appears for you to change the code for the drive."
I am unable to test this as I don't have a any DVD's that I've ever had problems with.
Also, you must be aware of the Warning:
IMPORTANT:You can set the region code for your DVD drive only five times (including the original setting). The fifth time you change the code, it will be permanently set.
Anyway, maybe someone with a DVD from a different region (?) will come along and answer this for you.

Yes, this absolutely works. You put in the "foreign" dvd and the dialogue box comes up and you switch it to the desired region. Since it does only work a few times, it may not be a solution for you.

Careful with changing the region code on the drive, from what I understand you can only do it three or four times.
But I *think* VLC will play it regardless of the region coding of the disc itself.

I can confirm that. We occasionally receive DVD media from Korea which has been coded for the Asia region and VLC plays them without a problem. No need to mess with region codes.
