Check any forum, and over 80% of the answers are along the lines of "I prefer Matte anyday"
1. That's a made-up stat right there.
2. It's rather clear that if the majority of people buying laptops preferred matte, Apple's offerings would be a huge flop (as would all Windows laptops, which are glossy).
I'm not commenting on which one is "better," but let's stop pretending that mean old Apple is defying the public's desires. Winning a poll in a nerd forum is hardly representative of the real-world marketplace.
3. Matte is more expensive. At the consumer and low-end pro level, Apple apparently doesn't feel its worth offering the option. Third-party solutions are available if you want them (about $200 IIRC).
4. Matte screens, by virtue of not having a protective shield on them, tend to sustain more damage.
5. Only pros care about this stuff, and REAL pros carry big laptops.
I am anxiously waiting to buy a mac once they come out with a matte option.
Good luck!
