Why can't I find PDFs and Word docs contained in Whatsapp messages on my iPad

In these coronavirus lock-down times, I'm getting quite a lot of PDFs and Word documents sent to me as attachments to Whatsapp messages. When I click on them - using my iPad - I'm told they are downloaded but I can't find them anywhere? I've got the Word and Adobe Acrobat apps for iPad but that doesn't seem to help.

Where are these files stored on my iPad and how can I reconfigure the settings so that (a) i can find them quickly or, better still (b) they open immediately when I click on them?

Are you using the WhatsApp iPhone app, or an unofficial app to access WhatsApp? Have you tried the web portal on your iPad?

I have been using an App I got from the AppStore called Messenger for Whatsapp Web

I don't have any problems with the app on my iPhone, but was somewhat ignorant about the Portal and the ability to view/send via the iMac - like Apple's Messages.

You have prompted me to set this up, which was straightforward.
