Hello all,
I'm preparing to order a new MacBook Air 13.6". Luckily I can order a QWERTY keyboard here in France, though it will take two weeks. However, in placing the order I learned that there are three possibilities for an English-language keyboard. I know I don't want a British keyboard, but up to now I have been using a US English physical keyboard (bought my laptop in the States) with software set to "US-international" configuration. I touch-type in English and do pretty well with the key combinations required to type in French. If I need other languages, I can always consult the appropriate keyboard viewers.
Is there any reason that I should order a "US-International" keyboard ?? I have seen some criticism of same in some internet discussions. I'm afraid that it will be hard to get used to even though the differences are not great.
Thanks for your ideas !

I know I don't want a British keyboard. Fair enough.

I touch-type in English and do pretty well with the key combinations required to type in French. Fine.

If I need other languages, I can always consult the appropriate keyboard viewers. Great.

Is there any reason that I should order a "US-International" keyboard ?? No.

It seems to me that you've already got the best option. I congratulate you on your research into Keyboards.

OK, if I may, a correlated question : I'm actually giving my old Macbook Retina 12" to a friend (I've since read that it's the coolest Macbook ever made, but I can live with her having that :) ).
The friend is French and doesn't know a lot about computers (but her brother does, apparently). She's never worked on a Mac... but totally willing to switch.
My computer has a US QWERTY keyboard. Friend said her Blackberry (she's 40ish but vintage !) has a QWERTY keyboard which doesn't bother her. I have wiped the old Macbook and was ready to reinstall macOS Ventura, but stopped because I wasn't sure what would be better : English or French version.

Your views : should I

1) go ahead and install the OS in English so it will work better with the US keyboard,

2) install OS in French and let her figure out the keyboard,

3) install OS in French and tell the computer it has a QWERTY keyboard,

3) not install any OS and make her go through Mac Recovery - which requires internet connection, password etc . - to do what she wants?

I have read threads about keyboards and OS, and see there's a way to change the default language via Terminal. Would that be too challenging for a newbie?

Thanks for insight !

BTW, I did order the MBA with the simple US-QWERTY keyboard. To be delivered in 10 days.
