It's just out of curiosity.

I know, for example, in Linux and BSD operating systems it's usually located in "/boot/*kernel image*"

I've been looking at the contents of the hard drive and was wondering if it's "mach_kernel".

Again, I'm just curious...

Well you are familiar with Linux and BSD .
You do know the command uname -a
It tells you with version of Darwin kernel you are using .
And yes the Darwin kernel is a type of mach-kernel .
I suggest boot in the verbose mode pressing the command key and the v at the same time and you will see the boot sequence

I actually do have it set to load in verbose mode all the time...thanks to my Linux "life style"...however, it seems that at the stage where it boots the kernel (before it adjust the screen to the native resolution) it goes by waaaay too fast...I'm pretty sure that's when the kernel is loaded...unless that's the Apple version of a bootloader.

What are you exactly looking for the kernel ?
Or the kernel extensions .
The are located at different directories .
Some are located at Library/Extensions others System/Library/Extensions .
If you really like to know what Mac has under its hood , become a member of ADC .
To my knowledge every can join ADC
