the equivalent of a .exe file on a mac is .app (it doesn't need to be installed.) an installer file is what is usually referred to as a "package", or a .mpkg, and this sets off an installer.
usually these themes come with a .mpkg file that you open. have a look on deviantart, theres quite a few, really easy to install.
