The iPad is another brilliant move by Steve Jobs, one of the greatest sales persons of our times. This guy continues to line Apples coffers with all the money they can extract from the Apple Faithful. With no USB, no memory expansion slot, no way to play, or display anything other than what you paid him for, via iTunes, Steve laughs all the way to the bank. Its like buying a new Honda Accord, then being forced to buy Honda gasoline from the dealer. Only Steve Jobs could pull off this kind of profit taking. You've got to give the man credit.

I guess ? It's just such a bizarre phenomena ! I have to say, I personally agree with puncheonrum. But that's only on a personal level. I can't say that our view points are correct obviously, because there ARE people who want this thing. I honestly haven't got the mental strength to try and pick the reasons apart, nor do I have the patience for that.

But what stands out for me in logical terms is that there's a segment of the market whom fall into several game changing categories:

1. Are really into Apple and will get anything new they put out just because
2. Geeky Tech gadget Nerd (is that redundant?) whom is an early adapter
3. don't own a laptop or netbook and don't need the features offered by said devices (how or why I'll never understand) and the price point for such a flashy "gotta have it" new jesus device would be silly to pass up (people love to show their Apple stuff off in Starbucks. Kind of makes up for only being able to afford a single shot latte and sitting there all day)

The basic logic of this is both unsettling and dangerous. But then again.. we live in a country where people are dumb enough to follow every bit of what's happening with Tiger Woods as if it's important or relevant to their lives. Yet ignore things like people who have SO had enough with the government and the IRS that they crash their private planes into federal buildings, then never ask why the media doesn't spend ONE iota of time asking the REAL questions ! (rather than the 4 minutes they spend writing such people off as extremist loonies. And yeah, what he did was extreme.. but not really the whole point)

Sorry to say but.. from this perspective, it makes total sense.

I am not agreeing or disagreeing. Well I am. I do disagree with this perspective, but only because we're human beings and everyone's personal opinion is usually different. I would rather wait and watch before calling my cards, so I'm not going to particularly point out what the target audience is or which group of people are going to buy it. I am going to buy one, simply because I can do what I normally do on my laptop (besides use Photoshop and build my website) without having to lug my laptop around. I'm going to completely honest and come out saying that I really dislike carrying my MacBook around. It's the only computer in this house that works 100% everyday, and it's mine. And because I drop things (I have dropped it twice in the semester), I'm not very comfortable carrying it Plus, unlike the Starbucks people (sorry, I had to say it, lol) I do not like the attention it brings when around people. That goes to say that I don't like getting attention at all unless I'm with my best friends, and that's 5 people.

What I'm going after is I'm not saying you're right or wrong, just that no matter how much we say who (or whom, whatever) the iPad is for, or what groups are going to buy it, we'll never truly know until it's released and we give time a chance in order to collect enough "data" to know who buys it. Because right now, in my opinion, the iPad is open to everyone and every "group". Again, I'm just waiting before I call my cards.

They got us. Once again. Don't you see what is going here? Steve Jobs did an awesome job. We are all arguing and creating a buzz about a product that none of us here has even seen for real. Only a few people in the world actually tested the iPad and now it's all over the internet. Even the fact that you are bashing the iPad or loving it proves that, once again, Apple created something big. Good job, really, good job.

Only that the analogy other than being brilliant stops short a bit. At least a Honda car that runs on Honda gas IS a car. It isn't a bicycle pretending to be a car.

The iPad is NOTHING....or more correctly nothing that ANYONE needs. People talk about it being more portable than a laptop. The stupidity of that statement is mind boggling. The iPad can't fit into your pocket and you'd probably damage it in your briefcase....so you'll most likely STILL end up needing to carry it about in some kinda iPad case. (Wouldn't put it past apple to design a sexy overpriced case as well).

You want to browse the web on the run- the iPhone/ipod Touch do that quite well. Those things have REAL uses and perform their auxiliary uses well. The videocam on my nano rocks btw!

You want to do some serious computing- get a MacBook. My macbook is wonderful. I love it to death. And here's a top secret info about a macbook - THEY'RE PORTABLE  OMG YES IT'S TRUE A LAPTOP WAS DESIGNED TO BE A PORTABLE COMPUTER!!!! What a novel concept. I mean it won't fit into your pocket but neither would the iPad

The "oh-I-need-a-small-sexy device-that-does-little-but-looks-great-and-I-can-carry-it-anywhere-to-show-off-because-the-people-who-do-real-work-are-using-laptops" market is alarmingly huge:Shouting: But heyyyyy at least it will force the multitasking-impaired to read a bit :Smirk:

You need to calm down. Plus, what are your sources that accurately state "no one needs an iPad"? Links would be great too. I think what people who say things like you just need to not post at all. All that text you just posted has absolutely no meaning except that it's your opinion. And anyway, if you really feel so strongly negative towards the iPad, don't buy one.

"You want to do some serious computing. . ."

Oh my lord. The iPad wasn't designed to do serious computing, or meant to replace the laptop. It's a middle device , not a replacement.

This kind of speculation really does no good.

P.S. What is Honda gas? And what does that have to do with anything?

Maybe if you are a kid and can see the small screen well on the iPhone, but what about people that have issues seeing a full web page on a small screen like the Touch and iPhone? That larger screen sure would make browsing the web for more than some quick info a lot more enjoyable for people who don't have perfect eyesight like a 10 year old kid! :D

And people always blame Steve Jobs and his so called Cool Aid and Distortion Field for people purchasing a Mac, iPod, Etc. Funny, when I first used and loved my first Mac I did not even know who Steve Jobs was. Never heard him talk, never seen him. What sold me on the Mac Plus/SE was the OS and the way it worked. It sold itself. No one had to say a word. The Mac did the talking to me.

Look man, when I saw the product launch I almost threw up. Steve was basically telling everyone that the iPad browsed the net better than a laptop  If you guys (i.e. the ones that reach first for the kool aid) believe THAN then this discussion is over there's nothing that I can say to convince you of my point.

And I'm not even denying that there IS a market for it. It is as you rightly put it a middle device. Because it may not particularly fit my personal circumstances may no doubt bias my viewpoint, but I'm essentially against the IDEA of it. Why did Apple have to be so mean not to include basic things that the iPhone/Touch/Macbook have? It's supposed to be a mid device right? Then why was USB removed from it when the devices listed above ALL have it? What about multi tasking? By nature the iPhone is already a multi tasker and let's not get started on the laptops.

Other than the e-book reading and the larger screen it offers NOTHING NEW (that we as yet know of- gotta love the disclaimers :D). Infact it's a diminished iPod touch That's the long and short of it.

Steve said it browses internet and does video better than a netbook. He said nothing about it better then a proper notebook. He even said in the keynote how the ipad fits in Apple current product scheme inbetween the norebooks too.

Agreed. Steve (and subsequently Tim Cook in a separate event) have taken great pains to portray the iPad as *middle* device, meaning better than netbooks and lesser than notebooks. But again, people who are thinking "well why should I buy something that's lesser than a notebook" are *entirely missing the point of the device* and if they still haven't figured it out, we'll just have to wait until hands-on experience enlightens them.

Some will not be enlightened. There will be those (a great many) for whom the iPad will not have a place in their lifestyle. If they can't figure out that not everyone's lifestyle matches theirs, well... there is not much point in even discussing the matter with them.

Most folks seeing a device for which they have no use just move on past the aisle where it sits. The haters here, and the ones that feel they need to tell everyone else "you don't need this because I don't" are just mad because they wanted an Apple netbook that would do everything their current $1,000 - $2,000 notebooks would do for only $300.

They didn't get what they wanted, so here we are... with another pointless opinion about how it doesn't do what they want it to do.

I can understand where you are coming from, but I'm saying to at least give it a chance. Yeah, it does seem like a big iPod touch, but then what's so bad about that? A large screen will make it a lot easier to view web pages, type notes, whatever. Then the iPad - optimized iWork software, and the more powerful processor that will give developers the opportunity to make more power-intensive software that couldn't run on the iPod. The GUI got an uplift, and it's still really thin.

All I can say is I am eager to try it out, eager enough to make it my companion in college. If I absolutely msut, I will bring my MacBook instead, and if there is anything that requires windows, I still have my (extremely slow) Toshiba Satellite. So I won't have to totally rely on the iPad, just in case it wasn't what I expected or anything. If anything, I'll use it at home a lot because I really hate web browsing on my phone, and sometimes I don't feel like using my MacBook, especially when I'm somewhere else in the house relaxing.

Never disagreed that it was middle....but why did they remove things that were present on the laptop AND iPhone end such as multi tasking and USB? THAT makes even the "mid device" claim a farce

There is no USB on the iPhone.
There is really no multi-tasking on the iPhone either.
The multi-tasking the reviewers that actually did have their hands on the device are talking about involves the ability to have two apps on screen at a time. The iPhone is not capable of this either. Until this thing comes into use where we get more than a 15 minute trial, none of us really know the full capabilities or full lack that may exist.

Bottom line, there is nothing besides being a phone and having a camera that we know of that has not been included on the iPad that exists on the iPhone while the iWork apps have been added for a whole new functionality.

The iPad is a first gen device. It is a new animal on the computing scene that does not fit into any of the traditional categories. We have a round peg here. Let's see how the round peg works instead of trying to put it into the square hole before it's even been released.

My bad about the iPhone having usb...the rest still stands though. Never said that it could run two apps on the same screen

I find the lions share of all Apple products quite nice. Well engineered, terrific industrial designs and impressive packaging. Attention to detail is stellar and the bottom line is they are quite well though out.

Is a new product like the iPad perfect? No. But so what? Give them the credit they deserve for creating something new, even if it's not totally revolutionary or perfect. At least they are willing to take a risk and do something new.

So while its easy for others to sit back and be ever so critical, there's a lot to be said for creating a device and putting it out there.

When people just say ipod. People once thought a chunky classic like thing, then it changed to the nano and now I think it's changing again slowly to the touch. So really "ipod" on it's own means a different ipod to many people.

No, they mean just that, iPod. Not the touch. My friends hate everything Apple.
