Ok I made the switch 3 days ago, been hardcore PC guy.
My first impression is that MAC is an awesome machine.
I just need to understand the MAC Lingo and my machine.

First off I see on software the requirements listed usually say G5 or G3 required. What is G5 and what do I have?

I just bought the new IMAC 20 heres the specs
2.66 ghz core 2 duo and 320 gbhd

I have also noticed that downloading speed seems a lot slower than the pc.

I made the switch because I'm a musician who was so fed up with PC was doing.
I am already off and running with garage band. Everything seems so user friendly.

G5 is the model before Intel, which is what you have. You have a newer computer, so anything that says G5 and higher, you'll be fine. You didn't mention how much RAM you have, which could be why your downloads seem slow. Check to see what you have, and you might consider upgrading if it really bothers you. BTW, congrats on the recent switch.

RAM won't affect your download speed.
2GB is a fine amount of RAM to have in your machine.

If you are experiencing some speed issues with downloads, then you need to check your connection quality.
What exactly are you downloading that seems to be taking longer?

Are you people all using Safari? Have you tried Firefox or any other browser like say Opera? Does it still seem slow?

Oddly enough, my Macs seem to download at around 600 KBps under OS X, and 650 KBps under Windows. Not a huge difference, but enough to be noticeable on large files.

The speed of your downloads has nothing to do with the OS and everything to do with your Internet connection and the source from which you're downloading.

If you're referring to P2P or Bittorrent downloads, that's another story.

I guess the ultimate question is what is it that you're downloading?

Add ons for garage band 1 was 1.2 gb and took a little over an hour.
