If you purchase the upgrade, there is no reason to format your drive again.
You can simply upgrade your OS and leave all of your settings intact.

is it ok to just do an upgrade? i know with a pc, it does not work very well. and also, say i went with an upgrade and i installed it and 6 months later i have a problem with the OS... would i be able to use my recovery disks and then use the upgrade again or would i have to buy it again. thanks...

Yes, upgrading is just fine.
And if by "PC" you mean Windows, well... this isn't Windows. ;)

Stop thinking about what you did with Windows, as much of how it worked holds no relevance with your Mac. :black:

ok thats what i was hoping lol. but i still ask, if something went wrong with the os, and i had to do a fresh install, would i be able to us the recovery disks with tiger on them and then use the upgrade a second time, or would i have to buy another upgrade.

thanks for all the fast responses..

If you purchase leopord, more than likely it will be a full install. Which you can install over the top of a previous revision or you can do a fresh install. As for your applications, you should have the original copies, from where you got them from. So if you need to re-install you will not loss anything.

what about apps that came with the computer? like garage band....

garageband and regular apps from ilife shouldnt be an issue as they probably come in the leopard dvd, but the apps i lost when i upgraded from my ibook to macbook pro were quicken, a few games, and some other progs that were not used too much - in the end it doesnt matter all that much, does it?

No, they won't.
If you purchase a retail version of the OS, that is exactly what you get, the OS.
The iLife suite is bundled with a new computer purchase from Apple, but it isn't part of the operating system.

i dont care if i lose stuff i put on the computer, but if i loose stuff that came with the computer that i can't replace, then yea it is kind of a big deal... not really an upgrade then...

am i correct assuming that my recovery disks that came with my computer have all those apps that came with the computer ie. garage band and such? and if that is the case, if i ever had an issue after i upgraded i could just use the recovery disks to install tiger and then install the upgrade of leopard.

How much more space is lost after install? Does the new OS write over the old one...or do I lose a massive load of HD?

Leopard supposedly will be coming "Spring '07" - so barring any delays, sometime between tomorrow (unlikely) and mid-June. Apple will tell us when it's ready. If it's pricing is similar to Tiger, Leopard will cost in the vicinity of $129 new and $79 for an upgrade.
