Apple on Friday officially launched Mac OS X 10.3 Panther at more than 60 retail stores and numerous Apple authorized resellers nationwide. MacMinute received numerous reports and photos from those who attended the event at Apple Stores across the country.
Apple on Monday unveiled a new range of iBooks featuring PowerPC G4 processors, with the 12-inch display model starting at $1,099 and the 14-inch display model starting at $1,299. The new iBook line offers advanced connectivity with AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth, and all models include 256MB of Double Data Rate (DDR) memory and slot-load Combo drives for burning CDs and watching DVDs. The new iBooks also include Apple's latest operating system, Mac OS X version 10.3 "Panther," pre-installed. The new iBook with a 12-inch display is available immediately, and the new iBook models with a 14-inch display are expected to be available next week through the Apple Store. The 800 MHz PowerPC G4 iBook carries a suggested retail price of $1,099, while the 933MHz PowerPC G4 iBook is $1,299, and the 1.0GHz G4 iBook is $1,499.
Apple also announced lower prices for its popular eMac desktop computer, with the SuperDrive-equipped model now starting at $1,099. The eMac features a 17-inch flat CRT and a 1GHz G4 processor in a compact all-in-one design. It comes with either a Combo (DVD-ROM/CD-RW) drive for watching DVD movies and burning CDs or a SuperDrive (DVD-R/CD-RW), which adds the ability to burn DVDs. The eMac comes with ATI Radeon 7500 graphics with 32MB of dedicated DDR SDRAM, hard drives up to 80GB, and Mac OS X version 10.3 "Panther" pre-installed.
Apple announced that Windows users have downloaded more than one million copies of its new iTunes Link Maker for Windows digital jukebox software in three and a half days, and over one million songs have been purchased and downloaded by iTunes users in the same period. "iTunes users have purchased over one million songs in the first three and a half days since our launch last Thursday, which compares with one million songs in the first seven days when we introduced the original iTunes for Mac users last April," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO in the press release. "We're off to a great start, and our competition isn't even out of the starting gates yet."
Apple said it will hold its annual analyst meeting on Wednesday, November 5, 2003. The gathering will take place from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. PT on the Apple campus in Cupertino, California. The event will be webcast.
