Are you talking about the estimated battery life shown on the menu bar? It's an estimate. It will change from 2:00 to 5:00 depending on how you are using the computer.

The actual battery life will also vary. If you use DVD player, Airport, or do a lot of disk (downloading files, etc), the battery will not last as long. If you just let the computer sit on your desk, it will last 10 hours.

so, is there no way to get a more accurate estimate?

Nope. The problem is, estimates are going to be inaccurate! Its hard to accurately figure out how long the batt. will last because the computer can't anticipate what you're going to do next. It may say 5 billion hours, but when you start watching a DVD and it will go down.

My own iBook arrives tomorrow, at least, that's what FedEx's website says. It's almost like Christmas Eve at my place.

Given the various battery topics covered here, how does one go about syncing the battery?

You just need to calibrate it when you receive the computer. Manual explains how and why you need to do the calibration. There is no problem with the battery, you just need to have reasonable expectation of computers. No, unfurtunately it can't foresee the future like the Oracle in Matrix.
