Vivaldi browser?

I have just seen reference to Vivaldi. Is it any good?

Sure, it's free, try it for yourself and decide.

It's a Chromium variant like Brave, Opera, etc., and has a few other things to differentiate itself.

I'm currently using Arc (yet another Chromium variant) and it's fine. This one is an invite only browser right now.

Shockingly good. Brave and Vivaldi seem to be in a competition for best browser. Both are being developed very quickly, sometimes leapfrogging each other. I prefer Brave, but both browsers are so customizable, and offer so many wonderful features, that you can probably be wildly happy with either.

Both are free. Both block ads. Both are based on the Chromium codebase. Both are very fast. There is no reason not to try one or both and see if you like them.

Sorry, not been on for a while due to ill heath problems. Some good news after a wrist fracture, which was first thought I would need surgery, the fracture has more or less healed and the DVLA has reissued a current driving license.

As an aside...I've been using Safari for the past few days. Unlike Brave, Safari choks on UPS's tracking feature, and it isn't fully compatible with Bing's News. I've also noticed that Safari always has me waiting. The waits aren't long, but they are annoying after using Brave.

So I switched back to Brave. My goodness! It's like getting out of a Yugo and into a Lexus! Everything is fast. Everything works. It's so much more pleasurable to surf the Web using Brave!

Pretty much all browsers are "free"

And for the ones mentioned in this thread which are "ad-free" by design - is there a way of disabling that?
I'm running into more and more news sites that now won't allow one to read articles unless one turns off the ad blocker one uses or ponies up $$$ for a subscription.

They all mostly get funded by Google, and if not Google search, other search engine companies. Google pays out a huge amount of money to browser developers for driving traffic to their Web sites or using their services or serving up their ads.

Brave uses ad blocking, which I'm sure cuts into their potential revenue that they might make from serving up ads. To make up for this, they have an optional voluntary scheme for you to see a limited number of ads to support them. They also have their own cryptocurrency.

Apple, by the way, gets BILLIONS (yes, with a "B") of dollars from Google simply by offering Google search on the iPhone. It's all about the ad dollars on the Web. The money that Apple gets from Google keeps Apple from offering their own Web search engine, even though it has been reported that Apple has long had one all ready to go.

Like most new apps I tend to transition slowly by keeping my current browser running as usual and when I have time I use the new one introducing "new" sites one at a time rather than importing them all from my existing default browser.
I use the existing browser as a reference library of bookmarked sites but I don't copy an paste from one to the other. This ensures I am loading just the current page for that site and gives me the option of choosing cookie preferences again.
It also gives me the opportunity to tailor ad blocking and tracking preferences that work best for my sites.
Brave has quite a range of security settings and it takes time to get the optimum results.
Having said that, once done I have found Brave to be the best web browser I've ever used, and believe me I've tried most of them.
Up to date, I find a combination of Brave and the DuckDuck Go search engine to be the best combination for my needs.

For those who are new to Brave, I recommend these settings be enabled first thing:


Brave menu —> Preferences —> Privacy and Security —> Site & Shield Settings —> Notifications —> set Don’t Allow Sites To Send Notifications

Go back to Site & Shield Settings —> Popups and Redirects —> set Don't allow sites to send pop-ups or use redirects

These settings will protect you from malicious notifications and pop-ups, including scareware and fake ransomware.

Up to date, I find a combination of Brave and the DuckDuck Go search engine to be the best combination for my needs.

I have no problems with DuckDuckGo other than I find its results to be disappointing. I've been using and liking this highly secure search engine lately:

I like it very much and almost switched to it. But I use a couple of sites such as DuoLingo that need to hear me talk, and Vivaldi is incompatible with how it works.

When you say "incompatible" in what way is it incompatible? You can tailor settings for individual sites or simply turn Shields off temporarily for any site from the little lion shield icon at the end of the search bar;

Thanks Randy for the suggestion, I'm giving MetaGer a try as I love to try new stuff. Added it's search page as a Bookmark so I can compare but I like the UI. I also notice it's 100% Green Energy. I guess thats a plus these days.

At the moment I am using Safari and all of my bookmarks are on there. Is it possible to transfer them over and if so then how?

While your waiting for our Vivaldi lady to reply, this Link from Vivaldi covers the transfer of all sorts of things, including Bookmarks from Safari or other browsers.

Technically, it's actually Vivaldi Importing data.
