I've scoured the internet and have had no luck solving my problem.

My internet connection (cable modem through Cox) on my MBP is extremely slow. I've tried resetting the modem and router, plugging directly into the router, repair disk, updating router firmware, as well as setting up my Network Preferences to use OpenDNS servers. Still it's slow. There's no other computers using my internet, which is secure. I'm at my wit's end. Talk about frustrating!

Hopefully there's a kind soul who can help me out with this.

try bypassing the router and connecting the MBP directly to the modem with ethernet. Im thinking it could be a router related problem, and if that doesnt work, get a second computer from a friend and connect it to the modem, if its slow then its your internet service probably.

When I plug directly into the modem it says that it has a self-assigned IP and cannot connect.

Once I reset the modem it fixed the IP issue. Yes, the internet is way faster when tethered to the modem.

Is there anything I can do to the router, like a hard reset to factory default, or is it just bad?

It's a Linksys WRT54GS. I reset the router to factory default and set it up. Still it was really slow. I had been using channel 11 previously and on a hunch I changed it to 6. Now it's fast. Must have been something with that channel.

Thanks for your help! Hopefully someone else can benefit from this too.
