Just remember, Jim, when you first start it up, it will ask for your AppleID and password to log into Apple to register the machine. So don't be surprised at that. It's part of Apple security.

Yes, I'm not talking about my Apple ID log it's a four letter word to complete the login in. I really think that happens automatically now when you open the lid. I don't intend using the fingerprint as my hand was badly scarred and poor fingerprint due to firework. Perhaps I could download to Snow Leopard, seem to remember that was a good osMac.

Won't be able to run that on a newer Mac. Can't run older operating system than it came with and the CPU is different.

You can use ANY finger for the fingerprint, so any with good print should work. It should actually work with the scarring, if it's there, but you do have options.

As for your wife and Apple ID, if it's not broke, don't fix it. Just leave it as it is until you get it going well. Don't introduce another change.

Hmmm...??? That sounds rather drastic for such a problem which surely can be overcome, or are you just actually wanting a newer MacBook and this is the excuse you are using???

By all means give it to some poor deserving kid who can probably restore it to as good or maybe even better than new. ;-)

Well as it was bought in PC, they were unable to rectify the email thing, so PC world sent it to an APPLE GENIUS in ManChester Trafford Centre and it was returned to me no better or worse. Advised to re-install osMac 12.2 on a download speed of 18Mpps and 1.8 Mbps Upload.

NO, my 27" iMac is also putting emails wherever it like> Luckily Another email I use is web based and automatically sends copies to @me.com, and to @iCloud.com Still have to sort them out. I depend on my computer for over 95% of grocery shopping, 100% of banking, as nearest bank of RBS or Nat West is a long way for me. Never driven over 40 miles round trip since I got the car new in June 2021.I am not buying a new Mac as a status symbol, I need one I can rely on and put emails where they should be, not where they feel like going. Health is Wealth, not vice versa. Regretfully, I don't know anyone in the 14 dwellings there are in my area, and not even in the village, we live, although there are 9 streets in the village
with Cove in their name.

Jim, I don't think you realise how much we admire you. Age, health and, no doubt, other issues. Bravo.

Now, as this is, in your own words, a brand new Mac:

Connect the Mac to the mains via whatever cable came with it so that you are not dependent on the battery.

Start up the Mac. Then, as Jake has so patiently said, let it go through the introductory stages eg choose your language, time zone and all the rest. At some point, it will ask for your (actually your wife's) Apple ID - username and password.

As you plough through, there will come a time when you are asked if you want to transfer your data/documents/setting etc from - choose Time Machine. And that will transfer everything (except, obviously the previous Operating System) such that your new Mac will operate as your older one did - but with a new Operating System.

You may need to go into System Preferences > Software update to make sure that you have the latest version of Monterey, which is 12.5.1

Your Admin login to the Mac will be the same as before, and your settings likewise.

Please don't feel embarrassed to ask any question you like. We're with you (y)

That fire induced custom hand/fingerprint should work very well and you can be sure it's individualized and belongs only to you!!!
It's your unique identification guaranteed!!!

@ Jim40

BTW Jim, the Google Maps photos of the Lake District UK shows it to be a beautiful and rather unique place and the lovely place to live.
As you say, there sure doesn't seem to be many if any Apple repair stores close by.

I thought it is going to be HIS machine, not hers. If it's his, it's his AppleID. If hers, you are correct, it's her AppleID.

Both hands were badly burned so have tried fingerprint without success, it doesn't recognise any fingerprint as I had skin grafts, one of these stupid things you do in you early teens.

See if there are any other suggestions that might work here: you're welcomehttps://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT212225

And for more information if you want on the technology there may be some useful information for you here that you might be able to use:

Hmmm...??? and here I was led to believe that they were all the same. Maybe things are different in the UK???,, but I don't pay much difference to that if they are:
To use your MacBook Air, you need two accessories included in the box—a cable and one of the power adapters listed below.

I suspect the one with the MagSafe is a MacBook Pro, not an Air.

Good thinking on your suspicions Jake... :[ ;-)

PS: why does my winky smiley icon show so small and will not enlarge if I try using a larger font size as it used to be able to do???

Which email services are you using for the three accounts? They should indeed go into separate folders with your email in the Inbox/Sent as appropriate. How did you setup the email accounts within Mail.app?

What, if anything, did Apple tech support suggest to try?

Using @iCloud.com, @me.com and @ Mac.com.

Nothing at all. Just for good measure I dropped it and cannot recover any files sent to me by PC World or Apple UK. My home insurance company refuse to pay for replacement as stated in the policy. Not been on much as I've broken my wrist and it won't heal. Taking my case to Financial Ombudsman. They can accept 'hearsay evidence' and I will argue that after I dropped my 2019 MacBook Air, on 'the balance of probabilities' I now cannot recover any proof that dropping the MBA Is the cause of not being able to recover any reports sent to me by PC World or AppleTec Support UK.

Those three, iCloud.com, me.com and mac.com are all the same mail service from Apple. It just underwent changes over time, but it's all one account, if the part before the @ is the same.

Good luck with the case. Not sure the drop and the issues with the two places are related. But good luck anyway.

Hope the wrist heals as well.
