Using MacBook Pro with one fan

Right now my MacBook Pro has only one working fan, long story.

The guy I was working with at the Apple Store said it was safe to use to an extent until I was able to leave it with them to repair the fan. But when I asked him "to what extent?" I was kind of rushed out of the store.

Any tips on warning signs of when I should shut down what I'm doing to stop my MacBook from overheating?

This will be a 'on your head be it'. Is the MBP still under warranty?

Which MacBook Pro are you referring to? Year and model? Newer MacBook Pro models only have one fan, so I assume yours is an older model? And is it safe to operate those models with only one fan? The answer is no as they were obviously designed by Apple to utilize both fans for efficient cooling. You run the risk of overheating components which could lead to a failure.

Sorry, what do you mean by "on your head be it"?
And it is still under warranty. I just needed it for the school week and have to wait until the weekend to have it fixed.

I have a MacBook Pro Retina Late 2013, I don't know if that's considered old. But it does have two fans, and one is broken.

How big is the risk of overheating components? I'm not sure is that's a question that can be answered. If it gets too hot should I just turn it off and let it cool down? Should I only use apps like Chrome and not open Photoshop?

It should shut down if it gets too hot. If you really need it, do you have a cooling pad preferably with a fan to sit it on? That would help. But obviously getting it fixed asap is the best option.

OK, you must have a 15" late 2013 retina MacBook Pro which does have two fans. The 13" models of the same year have only one fan. You can see the procedure for changing out both fans at www.ifixit.com. However my advice still goes.... operating that expensive machine with only one fan is something that I strongly recommend that you do not do. You risk damaging other components which as I mentioned could lead to a failure. I'm sure you would not want to have change out a logic board on that machine. Also, I assume you do not have Apple care?

I do have Apple Care, they have the fan there for it to be replaced asap. I'm just at school about an hour away and needed the computer back for the week.
On the note of damaging other components, I'm almost 100% sure I already need my logic board replaced.

I just wanted to know if anyone had any advice on what is safe to do with out overheating, if there were any obvious signs that it was getting to hot or whatever.

If you have Apple Care you should get the fan replaced as soon as possible. Again, I advise you not to use the machine until then. And why are you 100% sure that your logic board has to be replaced?

I'd echoed this sentiment; if there's one part that you want working to keep the machine in operational condition, this is probably it. While it might be inconvenient to have no computer for some time (trust me, I've delayed repairs as well because I needed my MBP), having this repaired now while it's covered will prevent larger issues from occurring in the future.

"On your head be it" may well be the reply you get from whoever you took it to. They wanted to repair under warranty and you would not/could not leave it. Get it in there for repair before it fails now!

listen to these knobs, I have my late model 2013 operating on one (right hand) fan right now, multiple tabs open and it's never been so quiet since I disconnected the noisy (left) fan.
Its perfectly possible they added two fan son the pro model to keep the noise down. (two fans at low speeds quieter than 1 fan at high speed right?)
-At the end of the day it's still got a lot of heat sink ducting and the other fan will draw the heat away.
My noisy fan left must have been generating a lot of heat, because the left one ibarelya whisper right now, and lately theyve been spinning up hard.
No okay so I'm only running chrome right now with 20 something tabs open.. but man, it's not even warm.
You know how hot it gets, when it gets really hot...
But everyone on the net is an ultra conservative nutless wonder when it comes to spouting off about "what the correct thing to do is".

This is y advice.... you know how hot is hot. by feel.So if it starts to feel real hot, shut down all those extra apps... just run the one thing your using... try to use it in the shade, or in an air conditioned room, on a cool, hard surface as much as possible.

( Maybe not on your lap in bed if you're going to run anythig hard core.)

These things boards are populated by putting them in in an oven hot nough to melt solder.

So just think about that.

Just trust your instincts and dont push it to hard... if you've got a cooler pad or whatever all the better.
In general warm is fine, anywhere near to hot to touch is not a good idea...

Just go easy on it and dont run to many intensive apps at the same time...

Mine is absolutely fine on one fan right now...whisper quiet and not even warm.
(I also just cleaned out the fans and removed all the dust bunnies etc, which has probably helped)

you could even get an app to watch your temp sensors... they exist...

Best of luck.

A warm welcome to Mac-Forums, @quinnjin.

I'm not sure whether you are asking for advice, giving advice or complaining  :)

I should also tell you that you are adding to a forum site, last visited in 2015.

If you want advice, or wish to give advice and assistance, then it's best if you start a new thread.
