Hello,

When I was using Snow Leopard and wanted all my folders to have the same view options, I did the following:

1) Deleted all .DS_Store files using:

sudo find / -name ".DS_Store" -depth -exec rm {} \;

thus getting rid of any view setting I'd applied earlier.

2) I launched the Finder and set the view settings of one particular folder the way I liked

3) I pressed the "Use as defaults" button in Show view options

4) And it worked

In Lion, I want all my folders to be arranged by kind (the new feature called "arrange by") and sorted by name. The above steps don't work! The "Use as defaults" button in Show view options is greyed out.

Is this a bug in 10.7.2 (after doing some Google searching I think this might be the case) or am I missing something?

Hmmmm. It was greyed out for me also when I first tried it. I then switched to the root directory of the hard drive and the problem went away.

Ok… what I'm finding is that the option is greyed out when I have any subfolder in my home folder selected. Ditto for the top-level folder where you see the various attached volumes. And ditto for /Library and /System. And very weirdly… the folder background color changed out of the blue to, well, blue… for some subfolders in my home folder. There is definitely something amiss.

Found the problem. If you have any view selected in the "change the item arrangement" button across the top of the window then column headers will be greyed out. If you select "none"" the headers will not be greyed out.
