USB port won't work

I loaded os 9x usb drivers (for an external CD drive) on an imac running 8.6 and upon restart my wireless keyboard/mouse will not work. It starts to work, but then quits 2 seconds after the 'starting up' message. It tried to start with extensions off, but no love. Any ideas?
