URGENT: Need image browser recommendation for high school lab?!?!?

Hello. Sory for such an urgency, but I am really behind on getting the new digital cameras, Canon A70s and A60s, up and running with software installed. The students are about to clobber me. I thought I was going to just use the Canon Browser, but compared to my Nikon View Software, the Canon Browser is the pits.

So what can I use?

Memory is a concern...about the only thing going for the Canon software is that it doesn't take much memory. A freeware browser would be ideal. And something easy, yet allows for printing of the image preview, etc.

I have 5 eMacs with PLENTY of memory, and 15 iMacs that will have 160mb of memory shortly, currently only 96.

Current version of Photoshop owned is 5.5...but I need a browser for the students to be able to use.

Thanks for the reply. We are using OS9. Thanks to another thread here...I just abandondoned the plan to upgrade to OS10 because of the iMacs we are using not being suitable for OS 10 (iMac 233s with only 160mb of ram). Does an earlier version of iPhoto work with OS9? I like iPhoto, but have only tried it out on OS10.

Any other suggestions?

Photo Browser for Mac?

Hello. I have been struggeling with this issue for several weeks now for a computer lab that I have moving to digital photography this school year. The browser that came with the camera is very limited.

Does anybody have any recommendations of what to use? On the PC side, there are programs like Exif, IrfanView, and XnView that are freeware and are very useful.

Any specific programs to try for the Mac that are useful enough to allow printing a catalog, not bog down an iMac on system 9 wtih 96mb of ram, and preferably be freeware?

Have you looked at iPhoto that comes with the Apple hardware?

I have not looked at it but it may resolve your problem.

iPhoto will definitely bog you down.. but then again I used a couple versions back.. hopefully they've done better with it. What I would do is going over to http://www.versiontracker.com and MacUpdate and I believe the address is macshareware.com - and do a search there. I really like iView Media Pro for OS X, but it's kind of expensive and Im not sure it comes in OS 9 flavor.

iPhoto is pretty cool...but I thought it only worked with OS10? I have 15 iMacs running OS9...and 4 eMacs booted in 9, rather than 10, to be consistent.

Is there an older version that works with 9? ANy other suggestions?

well there is one option but ill will kill you in your pocket... but by saying computer lab, i would tend to think you are at a school and the Edu. discounts might help a bit, but not much. Adobe's Photoshop has addons and software plugins that are fantastic for digital photo. Not only is it the standard for digital editing, it also can print out catalogs and a few other things.. but then again there is the money issue and the system you are running isn't the fastest. if your serious about digital editing, you will have to move into this direction at some point though. good luck

search for plugins for photoshop, i know my school carried a plug in that allowed viewing and printing of catalogs... i haven't used os 9 in a long time but the preview in OSx lets you view photos directly off the CF card...I'm sure that you could individually open the pictures in the image program in os9 (i forget what its called right now) or look at these

My apologies! I normally am very careful about things like that and making sure not to cross post. Not sure what happened here...as it looks like I even posted in the same area...I guess I was/am desparate for an answer. I still don't understand why there are not more ImageBrowsers for OS 9?!?!

For the time being, I have the students just using the Canon Image Browser that came with the camera. I will worry about this next year if we do not get a lab full of OS 10 capable computers.
