Upgrading my Ipod touch

My macbook came with an Ipod Touch with 1.1.5 software. I'm aware of the upgrade to version 2.1, but I'm too cheap to pay for it (lol). Would any of you happen to know of a free, more up-to-date version of Ipod software compatible with the Ipod Touch?
