Hello-
I just got a refurbished 2013 rMBP 15" 2.3 Ghz 16GB 512 GB SSD.

I want to migrate from an early 2008 15" 4GB system. My Mav 10.9.5 is
TB backed up on a Toshiba Canvio 1 TB 3.0 portable.

before I even open the box, I want to plan my strategy. If I just plug my SSD into the USB 3.0 port, will Migration Assist take care of estab
lishing accounts and migrating my Apple ID and all my "stuff"?

many thanks-Phil

Yes. The first time you turn on your new MBP the automatic Migration Assistant will appear. All you need to do is attach your latest Time Machine backup external drive to the new MBP and follow the directions of the Migration Assistant. Do not create an account on the new MBP. Migration Assistant will take care of that for you plus move everything over - your data and apps.

Hitting continue proceeded normally. Great value in having an onlooker.

You don't...it just sort of hangs around forever!;)

Someone 5 years from now will read it...then respond...not realizing that it's a 5 year-old thread!;)lol
