Thanks guys!

For Yosemite and text dictation is processor speed or RAM what matters most? Should Yosemite run fine on my machine if I add more RAM?

Do you know how to price RAM for this machine?

Much appreciated.

I know in your other post you thought that your situation was similar to the OP's. But now with the:

- additional questions you just posted (ram cost)
- the fact that you & the OP's computers are completely different
- and the fact that the OP never asked anything about "text dictation"

...you're sending the thread in two directions (confusion).

It would really have been best to have started a separate thread.:)

I would note that upgrading past 10.6 makes all earlier versions of pricey Adobe software (Acrobat Pro, Photoshop, etc.) non-compliant. I use those applications, and I see nothing past 10.6 that makes me want to pay a bundle for new applications. Of course, I could always keep a 10.6 partition on my machine, but why should I bother?

What? Do you mean we can't discuss NASCAR, global warming, my chocolate chip cookie recipe, and the next elections in Taiwan in this thread? Well then, buh, I'm outta here! :)

Seriously, good point, off to start my own thread.

Those topics would actually be less confusing within a thread.;) It's when we start discussing the issues two folks are having with two different computers is when things can get confusing.

I saw your other thread…and responded.:)

To Upgrade Snow Leopard, or Not

Hello AnnieGee,
I've been running only OS 10.6.8 Snow Leopard since it's inception, and as far as I'm concerned, anything after that is just 'fluff', to keep the designers busy. It's on my 17" MacBook Pro, and my 24" iMac at present. Be aware that it probably won't run on newer models. Also, I've purchased a number of what I consider valuable apps in the Past that none of the newer OS upgrades will run, especially my 'Eudora' application -- no doubt the BEST email app ever developed. If it was compatible with my iPad and iPhone, it would be on them as well. But, they gave up after 10.6.8, because it wasn't worth their while to continually upgrade.
The spinning 'beach ball of death' is usually due to your RAM being overworked. Try restarting when this happens, and you should find you computer working faster after that.
NOW, if Apple is listening: with all of the available cash on hand that you have, and with all of the colourless, basic, monotonous email apps that are out there; look into purchasing the old Eudora app from it's developers, as your primary email app. I know that software wasn't/isn't the mainstay of Apple, but you'll do wonders for your overall image -- believe me! Especially since email is the most used application on ANY computer, or handheld device. Hola from Costa Rica!

I am older and also an avid casual game player. I use “game manager” for most of my games on Snow Leopard and, if necessary, on Mavericks (10.9.5). Because I lose the ability to run some games on each update, I even have two bootable hard drives with older Mac OS’s and a computer that runs Mac OS 9. (Did I mention, “avid” player?)

The spinning apple, when using game manager, is not in the OS. When game manager is launched it immediately links to its online site. If your internet connection is down, slow, or the site you are going to has problems, you will get the spinning ball. To test this on your system, disconnect your internet connection and launch game manager when playing your games. Only stay connected when playing online games.
