I note that there is an important MacOS update. Currently ‘checking for updates’ is stuck in a permanent loop. I have Big Sur 11.6.5.

According to the BBC news this morning there has been a problem with Apple services suffering an outage earlier this week. Don't know if this a residual effect but my 'checking for updates' appears ok.

Big Sur update on my wife’s MacBook Pro went without a hitch.

In effect, it’s really just, or mainly, a Safari update; so Safari needs to be Quit. No reboot required.

11.6.8 is the latest version of Big Sur.

Thanks for everyone’s replies. Apparently Monterey had already been downloaded but, with a call to Apple, I was helped to remove install and restart it. Unfortunately it failed to install but I will try again.

I had a bit of a problem updating to BigSur, not a single solitary issue with Monterey.
