unrecognized external hdd

hello I am new to the forum,

I recently bought/upgraded to a mbp mid 2014 model with mavericks from a polycarbonate macbook with snow leopard. (yeah, I know..) I just assumed that the external hdd would just work and of course it doesn't. The external hdd I have is formatted to snow leopard but is not showing up in system profiler or disk utility in mavericks. The external hdd is a WD mybook essential 1TB.

any help would be much obliged.

Unless you're trying to boot from it, there's no reason in the world why that drive shouldn't be working.

Have you tried changing USB ports or connecting cables?
