unlock macbook

i have a macbook, its about 4 years old. i have forgoptten login details. i have treid command S but it just keeps going to the login box.. can anyone help ????

What type of login? Not Filevault one hopes!

hi, thanks for your reply. it basically does a normal start up that takes u to login box where you put name and password in. ive treid so many times with command/hold S .. it just keeps going to login box. i can't get the boot page to come up...cheers

What happens if you hold the Shift Key down (no other keys, just that one) until the words "Safe Boot" in red appear?

i just treid holding shift key down. the same thing happens, it goes to login box where u add name and password :(

This is how you get into Single User Mode. The way you know it worked is when you're looking at a command prompt. From here, you can reset the password for your account and then 'reboot' to go back to the regular mode..

i cant get it to where command prompt area is, no matter what i try when i reboot it ends up at login box

If you can't remember your password, Single User mode is the only way I know of to quickly reset it. The link I provided tells you how, its just a matter of getting in there. Not sure what else we can tell you about fixing this situation..

Molly do you see by chance a padlock when trying to login? Sounds like you are in for a trip to the Genius Bar or Apple Store.
