I don't think I should leave it in sleep anymore, recently when I have been waking up my iMac G5 the fans will go into overdrive and I get an error message on screen telling me to manually restart.

Should I just turn it off everynight or is there a solution to this problem?

It shouldn't do that IMO, I'd see if anyone has a solution.

Macs are made to be left on really for the cron jobs etc. Otherwise sleep and onyx, like with my Powerbook.

There's no reason to shut down. Maybe restart once in a while, but at your choice and nowhere near as often as you have to with Windows :) Unlike PCs, the sleep mode is acually reliable.. you can actually expect the machine to wake up again, every time.

Dual 2.2GHz powered by AMD Opteron - *Sends G5 & 8Gb Ram to scrap heap* Yeah! finally switched BACK!
I tend to leave everything on, not sleeping, just one. TFT's the works! 24/7. There's no wasting time waiting for it to wake up either. I don't see the point of conserving it's life, it's gonna be replaced well before it's initial death anyway, the average system only has a working life of 2 years before it's too slow for real work and i'm not talking about word pro or DTP.

Constant powering on and off actually wears out the circuits more, as surges of current fires through them and the hard disk weren't meant to be switched on and off, it's actually physically bad for the lib inside.
