My computer was running slow. It was suggested I update OS. When I click Software Update the progress wheel just spins. I've waited 20 + minutes. Suggestion to get past it?

What Mac? What version are you on and what version are you trying to get to? How fast is your internet connection? We aren't there, so we cannot see what is going you, you have to be explicit in providing us information.

Updating almost never cures a slow running computer but rather can make it worse. Please provide specs as requested in the previous reply and we'll try to help.

Also, how much free storage do you have? I echo what chscag has already said, in fact I would go further, updating almost never fixes anything.
