Time Machine on OSX Lion: I never configured the appl. but still wonder if it were up and running, would it lead a person to deleted files? ... when I go to Secure Empty Trash and then to Erase Free Space x7, I assumed that deleted files were gone forever. When deleted are they deleted from the backup, too? I have Carbonite online backup. That keeps current within 30 days. Why would I want a backup of files in long past configurations? It does backup actual files, correct, but in past versions unless it hasn't changed since backup. Second, as for Revert File in Text edit: I know the number of past versions is limited; I use that for word processing. How long does OSX maintain them on a file that's been modified dozens of times over many months or years? Pls. advise and explain to someone who knows little of OSX even now... thanks.

You do seem a bit worried. Anyway, if you never configured Time Machine and never authorized it to use a hard drive for backup then there is no Time Machine backup. That is a service that must be turned on. If you are worried look at the external drive. It will show a folder for Time Machine but if you never turned it on in the System Preferences -> Time Machine then no there is no backup.

BTW: Those embarrassing photos or useless memos might just be on Carbonite and if you believe that is secure well just check out all the recent companies that have been hacked.

No they were on the laptop and I had Carbonite on another machine and only now transferred it over and brought in recovered files at the same time. But by no means did Carbonite have all the files backed up. A number of folders came along empty. I still think I need to back up files i use almost every day to a flash drive.
