Time Machine Yosemite

I bought a new Desktop Mac (Yosemite) in February - transferred everything from my old Mavericks one using Time Machine.
I now can only scroll back to TM files as far as February. However, there are two lists in the Finder - one Backup and one Backup 2. This latter one contains all the data from 2008 till the date of installing the new computer. I still have access to these older files. However, yesterday, there was a mix-up so when looking for a recent file, by scrolling back, only the old files were available. I managed to restart and things came back into order. But I'm concerned about this matter and would like to have a fix to guard from it happening again.

The best fix is to get rid of old backups. There just isn't any sense keeping Time Machine backups from 2008. Anything in those backups that are precious should be permanently stored somewhere else. There's no way you're going to restore from real old backups without possibly messing your current system up. I keep Time Machine backups no longer than one year. Every month I delete a month's backups from the previous year.

Good advice. A habit of my age-group (seriously old!) is to cling on to the past.
I'll have to find out how to go about deleting the older back-ups, or transferring them to another disc.
