From my observation, it seems to take TM a while to be prepared to display what's in those older folders. My problem was that the oldest folders wouldn't open, but the recent ones would. After a few days of trying periodically, one more day opened, then another one and eventually they all opened. Then came 10.10.1 with an update to TM and again the oldest would not open immediately. TodaY I can get back to Feb 7, 2014, but I have backups to the first of January that show in the Time Machine folder, but which I cannot yet get to.
The only thing I can think of is that TM needs to reindex the files in the backups and that it takes a while for that to happen.
