I am have the worst time with a computer since having windows way back when. I upgraded to Yosemite and since then my macbook has been a complete drag. The spinning wheel is present on almost every program. So I decided to do a backup and go back to Snow Leopard. I have a brand new Seagate ED. I get the "Time Machine couldn't backup to Seagate drive" only a few minutes into it. I click on details and "An error occurred while copying files. The problem may be temporary. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk." is what I get. Over and over. Same thing. So I figured I could just take what I need and move it to a few thumb drives but no. I move folders 10 gigs, 80 gigs, 150 mb and I get these errors that there is a file that can't be read or written and the process quits. I have never had any issues like this. What's my best route to getting back to SL at this point?

Instead of going back, open Disk Utility and repair the drive. That could very well solve the problem.

I'm going back one way or the other. I already did the disk repair. Nothing was wrong with it. I can't transfer folders from the finder window to a thumb drive. I tried copying and pasting my iphoto folder to another finder window and 554 mb into 557 mb of the iphoto transfer, finder says it ran ito a non writable or readable file and quit.

Best route back to Snow Leopard is to boot from your install disc, erase and format the dive and install SL. If you don't have the DVD, Apple still them for $19.95 at Apple Online including postage.

SL will not install on the 2012 MBP ~ as a rule of thumb no going backwards to an operating system older than your computer. Personally have avoided Seagate drives for the past couple of years because of problems. Take it you formatted the Seagate Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as they invariably come NTFS? How much memory is in your 2012 MBP? Most agree 8GB the shot for Yosemite. Update Yosemite to today's releae of 10.10.2 as others have reported Time Machine works much better.

And for what it is worth after formatting the Seagate see if SuperDuper or CarbonCopyCloner will install a clone on it. If no joy you may well have a dud drive.

Yes I formatted the drive to os journaled. I have the disc for SL. I have 200+ gigs left of 500. My problem now is that I can't even copy folders to a 64gb thumb drive to transfer the files back to SL.I don't even mind reloading programs. I don't even remember why I downgraded, er upgraded to Yosemite. I looked into rsync a little. I'm pretty much game. I just don't have the time to be sitting around trying to fix a stupid computer. Come to think about it, I think the las OS was Mountain Lion. I believe that is the disc that I have.

Backup complete! :) I did the 10.10.2 from 10.10.1............. hooked up the Seagate EHD and went to sleep. Woke up 3 hrs later, looked at the computer and it said it could not complete the backup, (as usual) but the TM window said it had 170gb done and was still working. Woke up this morning and it was done. Thanks everyone for the advice!!

The disc I have is Snow Leopard. Had them mixed up I guess. I had zero problems with 10.6.8 .
