Tiger vs. "10.9.5"

Yes. I'll admit it. I loved "Tiger", and I loved my old iMac. When I decided to suck it up and upgrade, I made the biggest mistake of my professional and personal life. If this post attracts anyone's attention, I'd be more than happy to go into details about this machine and "software". I hate it. Every other day, I either have a serious issue, from crashing Photoshop and/or AfterEffects, to it just deciding the keyboard isn't gonna work anymore, to a cursor that magically disappears whenever it wants to.

No "trolls" here. I just found this forum the other night and I was a little angry...ok, I was very angry. I sincerely apologize for the language. I wasn't aware of the rules. I'm just irritated with the overall behavior of this "new" machine. It's behaving like it has a virus. My Netflix playback is choppy, I can't run iTunes and work on a project in Photoshop, and I can't "RAM Preview" any of my AfterEffects projects for more than 3-4sec. I used to edit, animate, edit sound, and listen to music or watch a movie at the same time. I just wanted some advice from people that would know more about it than I. Please don't condescend. Like I said, I didn't know about the language but now I do. Sorry, again.

What was your source of the install of Mavericks?

Have you done a complete erase and reinstall?

I've never done a complete erase and reinstall, and the source of the install of Mavericks was from "Software Update..."

These issues have been something that I've put off and ignored, thinking they'd go away, and I'm fed up. Either something is seriously wrong with this computer, or I just don't understand how to adjust to the idea that "complicating" = "upgrading". It's called "progress". Move along with it or get left behind. The computer world is no different and in fact moves faster along the wheel of progress than most. Nothing has been what you call "polluted". If you haven't kept up, then it's time to do so or get even further behind.

You've likely gotten more than your money's worth from Apple. Nothing lasts forever. Now, if you want assistance with your 2012 27" iMac, be specific about what problems you're having and we'll do our best to help you with it.

But your experience isn't typical.
Now is the time to start giving us specifics to see if we can identify a problem.
Which mac? Which OS X version/update? Which application & version?
What symptoms? What have you tried so far?
& how much ram, & etc - all the details you can think of.

I'm not a "tech" guy...please, bear with me...I'm impatient, creative, and frustrated. I understand that "nothing lasts forever", and I've never felt the need to "keep up". I feel like my attempt to "keep up" is what is leaving me behind. Here are a few "symptoms":
- AfterEffects crashing in the middle of a project
- AfterEffects "RAM Preview-ing" 3sec of a 3min project
- Photoshop crashing at will
- iTunes library duplicating songs for absolutely no reason
- Cursor disappearing whenever it wants to
- Being bombarded with "updates" almost every month
- Crashing or "pinwheeling" everytime I try to multi-task
...I could go on, and in more detail. I haven't even started on "the cloud". Let's not go there, just yet.

There is something else going on with the new iMac. We need more information as gsahli has asked for. I have a MB Pro now running Yosemite but previously running Mavericks. I run Adobe CS6. I use Photoshop, Premiere Pro and After Effects all the time and have used them with both OS versions. I saw no difference in performance. At work we have a 27" iMac will 8GB of memory and 1TB hard drive running Mavericks. We use ProTools on it to record and edit music on it with no issues. The guys who use it stress the heck out of it and no complaints - believe me I would hear as the IT.

So in my opinion something else is going on. With more information we may be able to help.

Just so I'm clear…are you saying that your older 24" iMac with Tiger was running fine…and the problems started with the newer 27" iMac with 10.9.5 (Mavericks)?

Second question. If the answer to question #1 is "Yes". When you migrated from the 24" iMac with Tiger to the 27" iMac with Mavericks (10.9.5)…did you migrate all your existing applications and files from the 24" iMac to the 27" iMac?

Thanks, Lisa. What you described, is what this should be capable of. With Tiger (on my old Mac) I was using Adobe CS3, and going back and forth from AE to PS to Pr with no problem. Once on this unit and "Mountain Lion", it was CS5. Now, I can't even use my tablet without this thing throwing a tantrum. I'm not clear about what everyone means by "more information".

I will tell you that CS5 had a few issues that were fixed with CS5.5 but not sure that is even relevant.

If it were me, I would reinstall the OS from scratch. Of course back up al files first. I would fresh install all the apps. See if that change anything.

There is always the possibility of a hardware issue which can prove to be a real pain to track down. I had an issue with a multi-card reader that caused my main editor to act up so bad I switched to my MB Pro to finish a project.

Ok…that was the info I was looking for (how things were migrated). Migrating from OS 10.4 to 10.9 is a BIG jump…which would mean a lot of application incompatibilities. Sounds like you were aware of this…and did what you could.

I can tell you that Photoshop CS3 will run in Yosemite (I still have it) ... but I prefer Photoshop CC **so much more** it's not even funny, particularly with the new plug-ins I can use with it that don't work in CS3.

At a guess, I'd say that a clean install and up-to-date software would clear up your problems.

Funny i still use Photoshop CS2 because adobe gave it away for free so i use it on my older macintoshes all the time.
