PC hardware is usually cheap made and thats why it doesn't cost as much and i don't like windows either

I'm sure there is keys you press when turning a mac that has a bios like thing called open firmware

PC hardware is cheaply made, well that really sucks......considering everything in your mac other than the motherboard and cpu is "PC hardware". Your hard drives are the same models, your "superdrive" is just a rebadged pioneer A07 dvd-r, your ram is the same, your video cards are the same thing with a different connector added, etc etc etc.

Good input, however...

I've been in the PC industry for 10 years and I've never seen a virus successfully target a BIOS. However, Macs have one too, it just has a different name (Open Firmware).

As for hardware incompatibility, it's nonexistant. So long as you're using quality new parts, it will all work together. I've never ever, had a problem with it when building computers. People like to regurgitate this false information, because they heard it through the grapevine from somebody who bought a $2 motherboard from Goodwill, and it didn't work for some "mysterious reason".

The simple fact is, PC hardware has come a long ways, and is no longer inferior to Mac hardware (there was a time when it was, however). It's faster, cheaper, and and more customizable.

So...I stand my ground. It's Windows that sucks.

How about the thing with the BIOS? And the sad fact, it's susceptible to venerability when a virus targets the BIO's CMOS... by flashing itself to the motherboard? Is this also a Windows based Problem?

How about, actual hardware incompatibility when you use certain combinations of motherboard, graphics or video cards, sound/audio cards, modems, networking interfaces, various brands of hard-drives, tape streamers, backup devices etc. together and nothing seems to work? I mean, not even the default loader screen for the BIOS setup, doesn't appear?

I suppose those are also Microsoft's problem too? And you can blame Windows for the problems, too! Huh?

IMHO, the PC system have many problems and windows doesn't help with the problem.

Yes...this is exactly correct.

The only thing different in the Mac is it has a proprietary motherboard, and a slower, more expensive CPU.

I'm not saying I don't like Mac hardware; it's certainly attractive and very well built (mostly), but for a price. I'm simply saying that it's no better or worse than PC hardware, because most of it IS PC hardware.

It just comes down to the fact that Apple managed to make the best Unix desktop in the world, and that attracted me to the Mac side.

There are plenty of good points and a lot of truth in all the above posts. My bottom line thought and reason for switching absolutely is that Mac has combined the best quality hardware with the fastes/best OS and the best security. Pcs are fine computers, running a BSD or Linux variant, IMO

So what are you saying?


I have worked with and on sgi products for fifteen years. I see sgi and Apple as similar companies.

PC's are a Kid's Toy, most suitable for the techie wannabe with his/her's too box and Anvil.
Mac's are cute and fun, most suited for someone who wants progress.
But SGI Unix Boxes are even more fun.... well for making real money, that is, great for coffee lover's too! Especially when your waiting for something to render.

Mac does have a processor faster than a pentium 4 with HT, it is the G5, so really for a comparable price, a G5 processor is faster than a similar priced AMD or Intel chip. I don't think PC's are crappy at all. Many people and huge companys run on PC's which make truck full of money. I'm not saying they are better or wose than macs, but they definately aren't crappy and for "techie wannabe's" or they aren't "kid toys". Most people who are in the IT industry only support the PC platform.
