Hi everyone. I have an Imac from late 2009. I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Maverics I also upgraded from 4 GB ram to 12GB. The system is running very slow. Does anyone have any suggestions.

12GB? That seems a little odd. I take it that's a 8GB chip and a 4GB chip? Try running on just the 8GB and see if that makes a difference.

How full is your hard drive? The upgrade might have revealed some bad sectors that are making the disk misbehave. Is it generally slow or just slow periodically, or with certain operations?

I might also suggest downloading the Mavericks version of OnyX and run the automatic settings.

The memory consists of the original 4 GB that came with the machine . I added two sticks of Crucial at 4 GB each.

You must have a 27" iMac with 4 ram slots.

As far as the slowness…read some of the links in my signature (probably something to do with your HD).:)

I'm assuming this machine has four slots, so you're saying you have 2x2GH and 2x4GB? Is all the RAM in the machine exactly the same type?

Chas_m: Yes the machine has four slots.Same type of memory in each . HD is 500GB that was standard in the machine.

Nick it is a 21.5 inch model . How do I get to read the articles on your signature ?

My mistake. 21" iMac's have 4 ram slots too.

Just click on the links in my signature.

Will that thing even run right with only 3 sticks of ram in it? I don't know if they have to be paired or not.
Or is the original 4g 2 sticks of 2g?

I don't think it's the RAM issue and is what I always notice with upgrades - they run like molasses. Did you upgrade your install or do a fresh install of Mavericks? If you upgraded, it's possible that this is the cause.

That's what it's supposed to be. If so…all 4 of OP's iMac ram slots should be filled (2 x 2gig and 2 x 4gig)…total 12gig.:)

Could the slowdown be mds reindexing the HD? I see that every time I have upgraded, mds works hard for a while to do the reindexing.
