Whenever I google 'UPS backup not working', and select the first hit, my Macbook Pro goes viral, with pop-up windows and the inability to shutdown normally. I have to manually turn off power, wait a while, then restart. What's going on?

I'm not experiencing the problem when I do that search. Perhaps you have acquired some malware. Try downloading, installing and running AdwareMedic

Note: You must be running OS X 10.7 or higher. If not let us know and perhaps we can suggest other alternatives.
