I have not been able to use my SD for quite a while. It seems the hardware isn't even recognized as the system profiles states "No burning device was found". Further more when pressing the eject key, I don't even get the eject icon to appear on the screen.

Now when booting I can clearly hear the SD turning. I am doubtful this is a hardware issue. I have searched the nets and the forums only to come up empty in a resolution, and it does seem this has been an issue for many. Any thoughts or info is appreciated.

I also did an archive and install and this did not fix the issue. Could there be some conflicting driver issues with a mouse or external drive?

Hi there,
From where I'm sitting, it sounds like your SD has died.
The reason you don't see the eject icon on the screen is because either (i) there is no media in the drive to eject (I just checked this on my mini and no eject icon appeared, as the drive is empty) or (ii) the SD simply isn't being seen by System Profiler.

If I recall correctly, when my SD died in my G4, the drive spun up at boot, but wouldn't read/write media.

Do you have another drive to swap out, so you can diagnose further?

Hope this info helps. :)

Well I forgot to add there is a blank disk stuck in the drive. I think I may have used the drive to burn 5 - 10 disks in the time I've had the computer - maybe 2 yrs. I had this issue once before and was able to retrieve the disk - don't remember how. Now when I startup I can hear the disk spin, but there is no evidence that a drive even exists on this machine.

Hi again,

If you want to try and manually eject that disk, straighten out a paper clip and push it in to the emergency eject hole, located just below the SD's tray. When you push it in about 5mm or so, you should feel a little resistance and the tray should pop open far enough for you to pry open with your finger.

Hope this helps.

Unfortunately this model doe not have that hole.

I see this has been an issue for so many, yet there doesn't appear to be a resolution for it. I have hardly ever used the drive except for installing new software. So that really doesn't amount to much. I hear the darn thing spin up but that's it. I am confident, from my investigation of this, that it was caused by OS system update somewhere along the way or a conflict with some other hardware driver. It is strange that for all of the posts I have found on this, no one has found a solution save the "bring it be repaired". In some way I feel there is a cover-up going on here by Apple. Forget about the idea my computer is 2 years old. The drive was used a handful of times.
