Wasn't sure where to post this but wanted to know if there is a way to see if I am buying a stolen macbook. I have a gut feeling I am cause it is a "too good to be true" type deal. I got the serial from the seller... is there a place to go that i can input that to see if anything shows up? He doesn't have a receipt or the original box... thoughts?

You can goto Apple.com and check the serial number to see if it's still covered under warranty, Not having a receipt or box doesn't mean anything.
What is the deal? It could just be the guy is desperate for cash.

yeah, he says he needs cash bad and he is s student. he is willing to meet on campus and that makes it seem awfully easy to track him down but i suppose criminals can be stupid... my fear is buying it and then finding out it is stolen and doing the right thing and turning it in without being compensated for the money i spent on it... or worse yet, being legally in trouble for buying stolen property...

Honestly it doesn't sound stolen $650 for a 13" is not out of the realm of possibility considering it doesn't have a box. I see lots of students selling their Macs,iPhones,iPods...etc on Craigslist all the time to pay for books,tuition..etc

just sent him a message and he said if i did it tonight he would do $500 on it...
just looked up warranty info and it expires july 10, 2010 but that didn't really tell me if it was stolen or not... just showed that it was still under warranty...

buy it. It's a good deal. Just make sure you check it out I would be more concerned with physical damage, Also take into consideration he was willing to give the serial number I would say it's most likely not stolen, probably more desperate for cash times are tough for a lot of people.

I've been a student and it's definitely a possibility he just really needs the cash.
I'm just curious, does it come with the charger and the originals CDs? If it has the CDs then I would say the odds of it being stolen are very slim...

You're so worried about this thing being stolen...that you're passing up a really great deal. In the end...it's really pretty difficult to establish whether a computer is stolen or not.
Meet with the seller ASAP...size them up...check out the computer...and if everything seems ok...BUY IT!!!

Exactly!!! Great deals like this on a used computer don't happen very often. If this computer was posted on Craig's List...I would be surprised if it is still available.
Usually a great deal like this lasts less than an hour on Craig's List!

That's how I got my 15inch unibody one of those sweet deals on CL. Of course anything Apple on CL goes fast and unlike Ebay you can play with it before you buy it.

That's what I always say about CL vs. e-Bay! There is nothing wrong with CL. You meet the seller/buyer in person...you get to "play" with the item...and then buy it if you want (or not). No shipping or Paypal costs like e-Bay...or sales taxes...and you pay or get paid in CASH!!!
e-Bay is ok for the occasional hard to find item...just not as good as it used to be!
CL is just an electronic version of a newspaper classified ads...which is the way almost everyone advertised used stuff for sale (or other printed weekly material)...before the internet!
But still people like to bad-mouth CL...confusing!

I'm with on CL 100% All kinds of killer deals on CL. I just picked up a Apple Magic mouse for $25 in the box on CL. Not too shabby considering they run about $60 on ebay.

I got two Western Digital 160gig SATA hard drives on Friday for $20 bucks ($10 each) on CL. They were brand new (one is still sealed). A local repair guy bought them...and then the customer decided they didn't want them.
Good for backups or spare drives.

Got me a gorgeous black Macbook 13.3 4 GB RAM w/250GB HD, w/superdrive, and snow leopard for 500.00 and a 2 hour drive to Atlanta. Best part was, it was used computer store and the guy came down 200.00 from his original asking price since I was willing to make the drive. Ebay is a ripoff!! These days, they not only charge you to list, add pictures and use the buy it now option but they also charge you a "final closing value" for the sale. After that, paypal screws you by taking a percentage of the sale. It's a joke. Craiglist is the ONLY place to go for a true deal
