I am a professional artist and have still Wonderfull functioning Epson Expressions XL10000 scanner. I was alerted that it would not be compatible with the next upgrade from my Mojave, which at the time was Catalina, so I kept my system as it was.

I have been experiencing issues with the graphics driver that I have been counseled would improve with upgrading the OS. I've been limping along with this 8 year old computer and need to for at least another year. Is there a way to upgrade and still have my scanner work? I believe the issue was 8 bit to a higher bit # with the new operating system. I remember seeing an ad for some software that could do it, but cannot locate the info I thought I saved.

As I'm sure you can tell, I am not particularly tech savvy, just enough to do my design work ;-) ! Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Hi Audrey:

Welcome to our forums!

Mojave is the last version of macOS that will run 32 bit apps and drivers. Upgrading to anything past Mojave will kill off your 32 bit apps and any drivers that are 32 bit.

You didn't mention which Mac you have? Year? Model?

Your Epson Expressions XL 10000 Scanner will likely be able to use a third party driver if by chance Epson does not have an updated driver. But that all depends on which Mac you have and what version of macOS it's running.

The third party scanner driver that we recommend is VueScan. Not free although they do have a trial period to test with.

Thanks for the quick response. I have an IMac 27" Late 2013
3.2 Ghz intel core i5
w 32 GB ram

Best I can tell Epson doesn't have any driver newer than I already have installed.

I don't mind paying, it's a lot less expensive than a new scanner!

Would I be correct in assuming that this program would be able to keep the scanner functioning once I replace my computer with a new IMac?

Your iMac can install Catalina (10.15.7), however, that will disable all 32 bit apps and drivers. If you do decide to upgrade you will need a new driver for your Epson as I indicated above.

As you may or may not be aware, Apple is not going to produce another Intel iMac. The newest iMac (24" model) is powered by an Apple developed CPU (M1). All new iMacs and Macs will likewise be powered by the newer type CPU.

It means a completely new architecture which impacts software and even things like printers and scanners.

So if you decide to keep your current iMac another year, the next one that you might be looking at to purchase could be one with the newer CPU. That could impact the software that you're using for artwork.

I know you stated that you're not particularly tech savvy, however, stay tuned to our forums and we will try to keep you updated the best we can.

I too have an Epson a Scanner/Printer L360 external ink tank model which we bought in India. I needed new drivers after upgrade to macOS 11 Big Sur. I have to say I was impressed with Epson's speed in updating because although new drivers were not available on the US site they were on the India site.
