Well, since this topic is about a non working keyboard, so to speak, I am curious.

What do you all think about putting the WIRED keyboard in a dishwasher ( no soap or dry cycle ) and then place it face down on a towel and just let it dry?
There are several youtubes of people doing it.

Also, the only keys that are screwed up are the 2 brightness keys that now show mute and increase sound AND on the numeric side 4, 5 and 6 come out as 7, 8 and 9.
Yesterday I punched in each key on the board and that is what happened.

So, I am wondering about the total immersion and just cleaning the keys that do not work.

What have I got to lose at this point?

Thoughts?

dtravis,

He was not an Apple employee.
I updated my post above.

And thanks again for posting - twice! - to make sure that I saw it. Because that is what it was. ;)

And yeah, these new ones are really beautiful.

You are very welcome.

Since it's shot anyway you can try it, but a lot of times the liquid shorts out part of the Chip on the board and it only affects some keys. If it's the Chip nothing will help.

Consider this. Wasn't it a liquid spill that caused the keyboard problem in the first place??;)

Nick, I figured since it's shot anyway what does he have to lose? :D Grin

I have a CRAZY friend who takes out motherboards from his computers and takes them to the backyard and shoots water on them with a high pressure nozzle to "WASH THEM". He CLAIMS to never have damaged a board. Sorry That is going a bit far for me! :D Grin

Liquid on a circuit board, as long as it doesn't get into any component through a crack or flaw in the casing, shouldn't hurt. It is when power is on the board and a liquid is spilled on it that the resulting short circuits can fry internals of the various components. Particularly if the liquid is near the power supply and lets inappropriate voltages into circuits with lower tolerances.

Hey Dennis:

Back in the old days... the way to clean those iron clad noisy IBM keyboards was to place them in your dishwasher! I don't know what it was about those old IBM keyboards but they were virtually indestructible. I wish I had a PS-2 connector on my iMac because I would find one of those keyboards and use it instead of my Apple wireless board. I'm a fast typist and I could really fly on one of those keyboards.

Ditto here Charley. I could also fly on one. They never died. I do have one somewhere here with my old IBM 5151 from Boca Raton Florida and the green IBM monitor! :D Grin

Agree in this case.:) Keyboard already has issues...so great time for experimenting. But don't think I would want to try it with a fully functional keyboard. If I need to clean my keyboard...I do it the more time-consuming & less risky way...and use a barely damp paper towel...and maybe just a dab of dish soap for the more stubborn areas.:)

I think I have an old 3rd party Mac compatible ADB (or maybe it's USB) keyboard somewhere in the collection that had the mechanical switches for each key similar to the old IBM keyboards. As you said...very noisy...but also very durable.:)

It is a wired keyboard - an A1243 aluminum numeric keyboard.

That seems that it would be safer to do cuz it's not wireless?

I don't have a dishwasher but I am thinking to spray it with warm water in the kitchen sink and just let it dry.

I suppose I could pop each individual key and clean it too, although that would take a LONG time.
