Sorry to hijack your thread griffo70, but I just have one last question.

Instead of going through all that trouble, would this solve my problems and just let me move on with my life?

If you wanted to start from scratch, then yea, a new computer would help you "move on". But it wouldn't help with the backing up of stuff.

In Safari, there's a way to export your bookmarks. You should be able to backup all your music, pictures and documents easily as they should all be in your home folder. Finally, you may want to make a list of programs you have installed that you will want to download and install later.

Since your hard drive is failing, you will essentially have to reinstall everything from scratch. Unless you decide to ghost the drive, in which case it's as simple as creating the hard drive image, storing it somewhere such as an external hard drive, and then "imprinting" it onto your new drive.

So essentially I'm burning my system onto DVDs and then putting it all on a new computer? How much is an HD? If it's too much, I'll definitely get rid of this and get a real computer next time. :)

A Mac is as "real" of a computer as any other. You think that by going with a Windows based laptop you won't have to deal with failing hardware? Hardware will fail regardless of the manufacturer.

How big is your hard drive right now? I'm assuming you will want a comparably sized one as a replacement.

Does it sound like brewing coffee? That's what I compare disk access noise to.

My neighbor's intel iMac starts in less than 10 seconds. It's amazing. He's got nothing but the iApps running on it.

I was not referring to Macs as a whole group (though sometimes I do wonder, I won't lie), but only to my current computer which is barely a year old. I have heard that IBM/Lenovo laptops are the "best in the business" so I figured I'd go with one of those. And I realize that hardware will fail, but some seems to fail faster than other. ;)

HD says:
Kind: Volume

No, it is like a fast click type sound. I can think of nothing to describe it.

I clocked it at 30 seconds when I first got the MacBook w/ 1 GB ram. Now it's 25 seconds with 2 GB ram.

I wondered why my new MB with 2 GB takes 34 seconds. Maybe it is the 22" monitor, Bluetooth KB & mouse that is connected to it.
