My wife and I just replaced our iPhone 12 pros with 16’s. The phones are identical. But when they go into Standby at night (with the “red shift”), hers goes to a black screen after four hours or so, never one or two, always about four. Tapping it brings it back to life, to the Lock Screen. We even went to the trouble of returning the phone as defective. The replacement does exactly the same behavior (I’d expect that since it’s restored from a backup of the previous phone). BTW, we have identical Anker mag-safe chargers, 30W bricks.

Today we put the phones side by side to change her settings to be a mirror of mine. Tonight, her phone will be on my charger and vice versa.

What have we missed? Any ideas?

thanks

Compare the options under Settings->Standby on both phones and ensure they are the same.

I have my Display set to never go off when on standby mode, and yet it goes off at some point in the night on some days, other days it stays on.

Since I'm using a Magsafe charger, my guess is that the phone is doing a thermal shutdown due to the screen being on.

I see the same behavior. Standby goes dark some time in the night, returns with a tap. I tried to work with an Apple advisor on it, but the issue with troubleshooting is that it's random, so I can't reproduce the issue on demand. Finally gave up and now I just live with it.

Ashwin may be on to something about the thermal shutdown, but nothing is going on in the middle of the night to trigger a thermal issue that I can think of.

Mine exactly the same. Except, I don't worry about it ;) ;)

My rationale for the thermal shutdown is that the Magsafe/wireless charging is less efficient than the USB-C connector and generates more heat. Not sure if the screen being on and charging all night is breaking some boundary.

I'm going to try the cable tonight to see what I find.

I use a magsafe mount in my car, and when I am using the iPhone to navigate, never get the black screen. And that's with the GPS going, mapping/navigation software running, cellular data streaming in and the battery being kept up. And the iPhone is in the bright sun, not in a dark room. I don't think it's the charging factor, or I would expect to see it in that environment more than in a dark room doing very little. I thinks it's more likely some timer that Apple has built in and either not telling us or forgotten it.

all settings are absolutely identical. i was wondering about the magsafe charger but it does the same with just a non mag charger as well. I've absolutely no idea. next thing is trying it without a case. it only seems to happen at night.

re thermal shutdown, I thought iPhones give a screen message during a thermal shutdown?

Keep me posted please… I’m trying it on the MagSafe charger now but no case. I’ll let you know.

I gave up like others and now use an app called Nite Time, actually I've had it for years.
It does bug me that the native option doesn't work as expected but Nite Time still does. In either portrait or landscape mode it does everything I want. I have never noticed any overheating issues.

I have an iPhone 13, and not sure what this issue is, I assume that it is only with the iPhone 16.

That looks great! I’m going to try it today.
last night we tried a few things, swapped cases, chargers etc. Nothing worked. It is odd that not all phones have the same problem though. Oh well, lost too much sleep over this. Thanks for the app suggestion.

Thanks for the reply and app suggestion. After trying everything to narrow the behavior down, including swapping cases, Harper’s etc, I’ve given up. I do want to try using a wire tonight just to see if it’s just a wireless charger issue.

Tried the direct wire last night…. Worked fine through the night. Now I’m totally confused.

I admit I was using a Qi charger not maglock but I'm sure I've tried cable as well.🤷🏼‍♂️

I think you are chasing a phantom. I've tried all kinds of chargers and stands and none of them have successfully changed the behavior. I've fiddled with settings, no change. I think there is a random bug that Apple either can't find, doesn't know about, or doesn't care about. I did file a bug report with zero response from Apple (not surprising).

The really strange thing is it only seems to happen at night. I've left my phone on the exact same stand for up to 8 hours in the day and it just stays in standby just fine, but at night it goes dark after about 4+ hours. Some nights, not every night.

I've given up.

Agree 100%. We’re using Nite Time app. The whole thing is taking too much mental effort.
