Hello I have a 2017 MacBook Pro with a failed SSD. Can I replace it with an SSD from a 2013 MacBook air?

You don't state what 2017 MacBook Pro you have. There are 2 different 13" 2017 MacBook Pro models, one is the 4 port touch bar model with storage integrated into the logic board. If you have one of these the only option to repair is a logic board replacement. The same goes for the 15" 2017 MacBook Pro. Only the 13" 2 port non touch bar 2017 MacBook Pro has a replaceable SSD and it is completely different from those used in MacBook Air's.

Besides techiesteve's reply, I'm serious why you would even consider using an old 2013 technology SSD rather than a nice new one with probably newer and faster technology built-in:
ie: MacBook Pro SSD (Solid-State Drive) Upgrades - OWC

Various choices there if your MBPro qualifies.

Only if the OP has the MBP 13" 2017 non touch bar model, the OWC Aura Pro NT would be an ideal cost effective replacement. To fit remove the base, then left speaker, undo the 2 screws holding the SSD in and the black tape, then slide it out, easy. Any other model and I doubt replacing the logic board would be cost effective.

Good point, and depending on their model, it might be an ideal case for an external or a pair of solid state USB drives double-sided or Velcro tape attached to the bottom of the MacBook Pro with nice short USB leads or whatever adapter is needed.
