this should be easy to answer.

if i want to connect two powerbooks together just to transfer files,
what cable will be fastest: ethernet or firewire (target disk mode)?

Well if both powerbooks have GigaBit ethernet (I am pretty sure that your model does...I know that mine does) and you use a cable rated for gigabit speeds then it will be faster but if it is just a megabit ethernet then firewire will be faster

Since the firewire is I think 400Mg/s and ethernet is 100Mg/s I believe, use firewire.

Megabit Ethernet - 100 mbps
Firewire 400 - 400 mbps
Firewire 800 - 800 mbps
Gigabit Ethernet - 1000mbps
